A Short Synopsis of the Djinn

 In long held Middle-Eastern belief, Djinn, a 'Genie' (also jinni, djinni, from Arabic جني jinnī) is a powerful supernatural being which occupies a parallel world to that of mankind, and together with humans and Angels makes up the three sentient creations of God (Allah). According to the Qur’ān, there are two creations that have free will: humans and Djinn. The Djinn existed before man. The Qur’an states that Djinn are made of smoke and/or smokeless fire(versus Man of Earth and Angels of Light), and they form nations, tribes and communities just like humans, and, just like humans, they can be good or evil. Similar to humans, Djinn have free will allowing them to do as they choose, follow any religion, etc.. They are most often invisible to mortal humans and some suggest humans do not appear clearly to Djinn. The social organization of the Djinn communities resembles that of humans, they have Royalty, courts of law, weddings, and mourning rituals. Djinn love and procreate just as we do.

The Djinn are mentioned frequently in the Qur’an, and there is a surah entitled Sūrat al-Jinn. While Christian tradition suggests that Lucifer was an angel that rebelled against God's orders to aide man, Islam maintains that Iblīs was a Djinn who was granted special privilege to live amongst angels prior to his rebellion. After the rebellion, which is often stated as his refusal to follow God's orders to serve and aide Man, Iblis was granted a respite to lead humans astray until the Day of Judgment. However, Iblis has no power to mislead true believers in God. Most Djinn are good and follow the dictates of God-giving aide to we mortal humans in many ways. Although some scholars have ruled that it is apostasy to disbelieve in one of God's creations, the belief in Djinn has fallen compared to the belief in Angels in the other Abrahamic traditions, Judaism and Christianity.

The use of Djinn to aide and grant wishes is strong in the Muslim faith as well as other beliefs. It is akin to the Christian belief in praying to Angels asking for help or intercession. Some even believe that Djinn and Angels ARE the same thing. Just as some Christians believe we are each born with a Guardian Angel, Muslims believe each of us have a certain Guardian Djinn to oversee our lives.
