What to Consume During
the Healing CleanseTM
• Fluids - Both from fresh juices and purified water. Approximately 64-128 ounces (1/2 to 1 gallon) per day should be consumed for an average size person (120 - 150 lbs). If you are not somewhat inconvenienced by having to urinate too frequently during the cleanse, you are not drinking enough! There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and this applies to fluids as well. Please use common sense (don't engorge yourself with fluids, don't drink large quantities of water before you go to sleep, etc.) Ideally, in the water, put VitamineralTM Green, Greener GrassesTM, or herbs/herbal teas to make it more nutritious.
• Herbal Teas - Use purified water only as a base for these teas. Use only herb teas that are herbs only, with no sugar, caffeine (some herbs have caffeine) or other flavoring. Stevia is an herb unto itself and a_ great addition to teas if they are bitter (stevia is a natural non sugar "sweetener" that also has healthful effects). You can soak these teas in water overnight, out in the sun or steep with hot water. In addition to being healthful in the first place, consuming these teas will help you to consume more water (which will help you to cleanse better).
• Whole Foods - Whole foods are those from the plant kingdom as they are eaten essentially as they are delivered from Mother Nature. Examples are: Apple - whole food, apple pie with refined sugar, white flour and oil - refined food; carob - whole food, chocolate bar with milk, oil, white sugar and chemicals- refined food; vegetables - whole foods, vegetable pot pie - refined food; avocados - whole food, extracted oils - refined foods; steamed legumes - whole foods; fast food bean, cheese + god knows what else burrito - refined food; potato - whole foods, potato chips - refined food; whole grains - whole foods, white, refined flours - refined foods, etc.
• Raw foods (vegan) - If you are not eating a large percentage of raw foods already, please try to increase your consumption of them. Focus on high water content raw foods, rather than things like dried fruit, dehydrated crackers, nuts and seeds. You do not have to eat raw foods to do this cleanse, but doing so will greatly enhance your health, for this cleanse and for as long as you continue eating them thereafter. Strive for 50% or more of you food to be raw (by volume). Raw juices count towards your raw portion. See the book, "Uncooking with Jameth & Kim" for recipe ideas and more information.
• Organically grown foods - In addition to having no pesticide residues, organic foods are simply significantly more nutritious than commercial produce. If you do not have, access to organically grown foods, do the best you can.
• Salads - Flax or olive oil with apple cider vinegar makes a wonderful dressing. See "Uncooking with Jameth & Kim" for more salad dressing ideas.
• Raw Vegetables (try to buy organic produce and products)
• Raw Vegetable Juices - and lots of them! You can replace most or all of your water per day with fresh vegetable juice. Fresh, vegetable juices are extremely nutritious. If you can, get a juicer and juice your own produce. If you are unaccustomed to juicing, you can start with juices that are approximately 50% carrot and 50% light greens like lettuces, cucumber, and light green celery. As you get more accustomed to juicing, add less carrot and more greens. You can add deeper greens like, kale, collard greens, dandelion greens, oregano and cilantro to your juices as well. You may want to mix them with carrot or apples at first (yes, you can mix apples with vegetables in juices) so they are not so strong tasting that you can't down them. Work with the ratio that suits you best. Don't worry if you can't handle the deep greens, or you can't juice at all, VitamineralTM Green is an incredible source of healing green juice powders, green foods and herbs (and they are significantly more nutritious than what you can buy at the store plus you will be getting superfoods you can not buy at the store).
• Raw Fruit Juices - Fruit juices, like vegetable juices, are a concentrated source of enzymes, structured, low surface tension water, phytonutrients and lifeforce! Fruits have unique healing properties that vegetables do not and vice versa. Those who are not able to tolerate fruits are at somewhat of a nutritional disadvantage.
Fruits are also a concentrated source of sugars, so it is good to dilute them with purified water (at least 50% of the total volume should be water) or green juices (better than water). If you have candida or some other challenge with sugar, be cautious.
If you have a juicer that can handle it, like a Green Life/Power/Star/Twin Gear Juicer, you can juice grapes, including the stems, for a concentrated source of the potent proanthocyanidin (pycnogenols), ellagic acid, and resveratrol antioxidants.
If you suspect a candida or bacteria problem with fruit, you may want to try drinking them with the Internal Parasite FormulaTM and/or Olive Leaf Extract (if you have the Olive Leaf). These two products have herbs that are anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. If you suspect a problem with blood sugar balance, try taking them with HealthForce Nopal Cactus (primary product), adding VitamineralTM Green, Greener GrassesTM, and diluting them with fresh green juices. You can do all of the above at once.
• Steamed Vegetables - Examples: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, corn, squashes, etc. (try to buy organic produce and products).
• Raw Fruits (grapes, apples, melons, peaches, nectarines, etc.) Try to buy organic produce.
• Herbs - eat them fresh, juice them and/or steam them.
Examples: Ginger, garlic, cayenne, paprika, oregano, rosemary, basil, thyme, marjoram, cumin, curry, turmeric, peppermint (some herbs are easier to eat when steamed).
· Sea Vegetables - Dulse, kelp, nori, arame, hijiki, etc.
Sea vegetables are very high in nutrients and have the ability to detoxify the body. Kelp and dulse can be soaked in purified water, rinsed and added to salads or other meals. The tougher leaves of kelp are a wonderful thickener for a smoothie made in the blender. Some people like to eat kelp and dulse right out of the package in dried form (especially those who eat large amounts of fruit and/or avoid all sodium). Nori can be wetted with water or lemon juice and you can wrap vegetables with avocado, steamed legumes or steamed grains in them. Arame and hijiki can be soaked in water, rinsed and eaten like noodles or spaghetti. See the book, "Uncooking with Jameth & Kim" for recipe ideas with sea vegetables, including "Macarame and Cheese" - 100% vegan cheese.
If you crave salt:
• While excess sodium is harmful, especially refined, iodized salt (table salt), people can actually become sodium deficient while on stringent cleansing programs, fruitarian diets, and water fasts. This can lead to excess water loss, unhealthfully low blood pressure, and kidney stress.
Perhaps the best way to get extra sodium in your system is to eat sea vegetables that have NOT been soaked in water (or eat the soak water along with the sea vegetables - sea vegetables are extremely nutritious). Sea vegetables give you a more balanced sodium to other mineral profile. Even unrinsed kelp, for example, is much higher in potassium than it is in sodium. Unpasteurized miso (available at a health food store) and then unrefined or Celtic or sea salt (this is very different than regular refined table salt or regular sea salt) are probably the next best `choices. Add these sodium sources to your food and/or drinks if you crave it.
If you are needing more calorie, protein, and/or better blood sugar balance:
• Soaked (preferably sprouted as well) and steamed legumes (lentils, soy beans, chick peas, mung beans, etc.) Some people have higher protein and/or calorie requirements, and the soaked and steamed legumes are important for them (not necessarily every day, but a few times a week - go with your cravings in this regard).
For extra protein, a good choice is also Spirulina. Although Spirulina is not very high in calories, it is 6065% protein (approximately double that of animal flesh) and packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Unlike the protein from animal products, Spirulina does not form excess amounts of uric acid (contributes to osteoporosis, arthritis, kidney stones, and body acidity in general) and it is gentle on the kidneys. Spirulina actually helps to protect the kidneys from damage by toxins and to regenerate kidney cells! Some Spirulina is contained in VitamineralTM Green. However, many people benefit from more of it, which is why we offer Spirulina as a separate product.
If you are needing more calories and slow burn carbohydrates:
• Steamed hard squashes (like acorn), potatoes and steamed grains. The best grains to steam include quinoa, millet, amaranth and teff.
What NOT to Consume During
the Cleanse:
• Animal Flesh - This includes the muscle and all other body parts of cows, pigs, fishes, lobsters, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, ostriches and other birds, lambs, deer, dogs and cats (as eaten in Vietnamese cuisine), horses (eaten in Europe), rats and monkeys, (eaten in Africa) insects, etc.
· Dairy Products
· Eggs
• Animal products of any kind (fish oil (use flax seeds or flax seed oil for essential fatty acids), whey protein, etc).
NOTE: If you eat animal products now (including raw animal flesh/dairy/eggs), please consider limiting them or giving them up for this program (or for life - yours and theirs). You are trying to detoxify, and when you eat animals you are not only creating poisons from their metabolism, you are ingesting their metabolic wastes which are added to your own so you have to detoxify them too. Also, animals concentrate the poisons from their environment, and you are getting a whopping dose of them when you eat them. Fish, touted as a "health food" by many, is no exception and is usually loaded with mercury, the effects of which can be devastating on one's health.
· Anything that would be considered "greasy".
• Foods that you know produce mucous or phlegm in you (if they make you hack and spit, you know they are mucous forming).
• Hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, or foods that contain them.
· Foods fried in oil.
• Extracted Oils - Eat whole foods instead. Instead of olive oil, eat organic olives. Instead of butter or margarine, use avocado. Instead of flax oil, eat whole, ground up flax seeds. If you feel you need an oil during the cleanse, stick with high lignan flax oils, flax oil combinations, or olive oil.
• Processed foods: Like candies, cookies, cakes, muffins, potato chips, pizza, cheese, etc.
· Fast Foods
· White Flour and products made from it.
· White, refined sugar and products made from it.
• Refined or iodized salt (table salt). This includes just plain old, sea salt. See What to Consume During the Cleanse" and the Questions and Answers section for sodium you can consume.
Some Additional Things You Can
Do To Have an Even Better and
Deeper Healing CleanseTM
Following are some additional suggestions to make your cleanse, and hopefully your life, healthier and happier. Do the best you can. Make a real, concerted effort. If there are things you can't do, that's O.K. Maybe you can do them in the future. Again, this cleanse is not an all or nothing. Do the best you can at the moment.
• Do not drink or bath/shower in tap water.
Drink distilled or preferably reverse osmosis purified water. Get a shower filter for your shower. You can absorb more poisons through your skin by taking a shower than by drinking tap water (because a shower exposes you to much more water).
• Remove toxic cleaners and personal care products. Most cleaners and personal care products (shampoos, soaps, perfumes, deodorants, laundry and dishwashing detergents, make-up , etc.) is laden with chemicals that contribute to destroying your health and making you toxic. Start by at. least buying the health food store equivalents of these same products. For the most part, these alternative products work as well, and in some cases better, than their toxic counterparts, are not generally cruelly tested on animals (force fed to them orally until 50% of the population dies a painful death, put in their eyes and allowed to corrode them, etc.), and do not have the devastating impact on the environment (which you live in). Don't dump poisons down the drain that will come back to haunt you.
For perfumes, use essential oils. Single oils can smell better than toxic perfumes, and, unlike toxic perfumes, externally applied and/or diffused essential oils are extremely therapeutic.
• Remove Mercury/Silver fillings by a competent dentist
Silver/Mercury fillings are a serious cause of illness in people, sometimes preventing them from overcoming other health challenges fully. Please consider having these fillings removed and replaced with a more biocompatible material. Make sure the dentist you have remove these fillings does NOT use any silver/mercury fillings in his or her practice and they are properly trained on how to safely remove them. If they do use silver/ mercury fillings, they highly likely don't understand the tremendous harm of silver/mercury fillings. They may not get it all, and if taken out incorrectly, you could be exposed to more mercury than if you left them in!
· Exercise
Exercise is the best way to increase you circulation - and it is free! Moving your body is essential for good health. Try to get some aerobic exercise for 20-30 minutes at least 3 times per week (everyday is better). A good friend of mine says "stillness is illness, and movement is improvement". He is right!
If you don't have time, you can be creative. Park as far away as you can from stores so you have to walk further to get to them. And don't walk, jog or run (careful to not get hit by a car in a parking lot if running or jogging). Don't take the elevator, take the stairs. Walk on your lunch break or other breaks. If all you have is 2 minutes, run/sprint, jump up and down, do jumping jacks, do push ups, just move around vigorously for a few minutes so your heart rate goes up.
Another great exercise, which is especially easy to do if you are ill, is to rebound. A rebounder is a small, one person trampoline that you jump up and down on. It is one of the best ways to move your lymphatic system and increase circulation. Anyone can do it and they are $30 - $50 at sporting goods stores. Better rebounders are available for more money and are worth it if you can afford them. If you start with an inexpensive one, know that there is an immense difference with better quality ones.
• Full Spectrum Light
Too much sunlight is immune suppressive, but so too is too little! Try to get as much of your body in the sun for 20-40 minutes per day (depending upon time of day, season, and pigmentation of your skin). Even if you can just sit outside somewhere for lunch or in your car with the window rolled down, this is better than nothing. You can even sit in front of a closed window with sun coming in it. That is better than nothing. Do not burn or approach it, this suppresses the immune system.
I also suggest you look into full spectrum lights. Search the internet or your health food store for more information on this. If you own your own home, add glass (without UV shielding/protection), ideally, not plastic, skylights to your home.
• Synthetic Fibers
Try to buy and wear only natural fibers such as cotton, linen, rayon, and hemp. Buy and wear organic cotton rather than regular cotton if you can.
· Plants
Plants create oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the air. They also remove many environmental poisons from the air, and, when growing live vs. picked flowers, they also add an element of lifeforce to your environment. Get as many as you can for you indoor environment. You can also get air purifiers (such as ozone machines and ionizers) to help with indoor toxins.
• Other Toxins
We are surrounded by toxins. There are always nontoxic or at least better alternatives. You can replace synthetic carpets with hemp, cotton, seagrass, natural tiles or wood floors, petroleum candles with vegetable oil candles, etc. Most building materials, including paints and stains, can have significant toxicities. There are not-toxic alternatives. Everything toxic and sources for alternatives can not be listed here. Try to be more aware of what is and is not toxic. Do your best over time to detoxify your life. Check out www.bioshieldpaint.com for non-toxic paints and stains.
