Why is the crypt for sale?
Richard F. Poncher ("Fred") was a true American success story. He was a hardworking, generous, and gregarious man who was also an extremely successful entrepreneur.
In the late 60s, while having drinks at the bar of the famed Romanoff's Restaurant in Beverly Hills, he struck up a conversation with Joe DiMaggio which led to the eventual sale of the crypt above Marilyn Monroe. He always joked that he was going to have in death what he never had in life --- to spend eternity with Marilyn Monroe. For the last 23 years, he has been resting in the crypt directly above Marilyn.
Over the years, offers to buy the crypt have surfaced. At one time, over $5 million was offered. In 2009, his family realized the value of Fred's final resting place had indeed gone up dramatically.
The family got together and decided unanimously to sell the crypt. Fred Poncher, being the true entrepreneur that he was, would love the fact that so many years after his death he found a way to still provide for his family by offering his spot above Marilyn to another admirer.
People ask how Fred would feel about the move. Knowing Fred, he would say, "I had a good 23 years with her....More than most good marriages! It's time to let someone else fulfill their dreams. My bags are packed and I am ready to move next door." And now, the opportunity is yours.
