  • THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER by Sarah Dressen

This is a sensitive and intelligent book for young adult readers, all about a 16 year-old who learns how to deal with love and with loss the summer following the death of her her father. Macy had been close to her dad, a popular local sports coach, and he’d encouraged her in her running. She had talent and athletic aspirations. But that was before she witnessed the untimely heart attack that killed him one day that he’d gone out jogging. She retreated into a tightly controlled world where actions and consequences would be sensible and manageable. However, with her very proper, priggish, honor-roll boyfriend off at “brain camp” for the summer, Macy gets a job with a catering company. The chaotic and exuberant people she works with, so different from her staid crowd, help her to learn to live again – and to land the handsome young artist who is her boss’s nephew, to boot.   Now in the Children's Category of my store. • ONE FOR SORROW, TWO FOR JOY by Clive Woodall

Kirrick, one of the last of the robins, is sent on a mission to save his homeland Birddom, which has been taken over by magpies who, inadvertently abetted by man, have destroyed the natural order of the kingdom. A classic duel between the forces of good and evil, this fable has richly drawn characters, lots of humor and action and a subtle ecological message besides. Disney has purchased the movie rights. • THE DUBLINERS by James Joyce

With its jacket cover photo of a bustling O’Connell Street and its astounding cast of world-class Irish performers, this audiobook was designed to deliver the Dublin with which James Joyce had such a love-hate relationship right to your door and disk player. And deliver it does, sometimes with the delicacy of a harpist, often with the impact of a shillelagh. The stories themselves are 15 distinct slices of Irish city life, roughly clustered into groups involving birth, death and coming of age, love – sacred and profane - and maturity. Most of Joyce’s Dubliners live ordinary, even rather bleak lives, from which they – and we – can nevertheless draw breathcatching moments of extraordinary insight. Unlike Joyce’s stream of consciousness novels, which are difficult and daunting, these stories are direct and accessible. The 15 different readers include the likes of Frank and Malachy McCourt, Patrick McCabe, Donal Donnelly, Brendan Coyle, Fionnula Flanagan and Stephen Rea. All are so well-matched to their tales that it’s impossible to pick a favorite.   Available in the store. Click here to purchase now!

  • THE CIGAR ROLLER by Pablo Medina

Amadeo Terra, alone and neglected in his hospital bed, has been completely paralyzed for slightly more than four years at the opening of this sensitively written detailed portrait of a dying man who’d once been a hugely vital tobacco roller.     A stroke victim, all he can do is blink, foul his bed linen, and drool.     He repulses his nurses and the hospital orderly who, with the exception of a nun, constitute his only visitors.     Terra’s sight, hearing, and thought processes – even his sense of humor -- are unimpaired, though the people who deal with him are indifferent to that:  as indifferent, it emerges, as he’d been while well to those who most needed care and sustenance from him.    One day, he is fed some pulverized mango and the surprising treat fuels flashbacks and free-associations that bring on a staggering moment of epiphany.   Affecting a gentle but dramatic Spanish accent,  Rudnicki gets deeply inside the protagonist’s psyche and allows us to see Terra, warts and all, for what he is and always had been.

  • MR STARLIGHT by Laurie Graham

This is a very well-written, wryly sympathetic, complex portrait of an entertainer, clearly inspired by Liberace.  A mediocre musical talent who parlays his larger than life confidence in his ability and his unerring grasp of any audience into a phenomenon, Selwyn Bott, the product of an undistinguished Birmingham family, becomes the consummate entertainer, “Mr. Starlight.”   The tale is told by his more talented but duller-witted older brother, Cledwyn, who wishes to resent him but, as dazzled as the rest of the world by his brother’s over-the-top panache and the feel-good aura he generates, can only accept his excesses and love him.  Alternately very funny and thoughtful, the novel  also inspects family dynamics, the entertainment industry, and the privacy rights of public figures.    Jonathan Keeble’s interpretive reading is perfect:  as the voice of Cledwyn Bott  he is a likeable and entirely credible working-class naïf;  as the other characters, he can switch accents and perspectives effortlessly  and be equally convincing.    But better still, he makes Mr. Starlight’s universal appeal emerge, palpable and important.
