The first thing you need to add to your backyard or garden is a bird feeder.  There are many different type of feeders on the market so do a little research before making your purchase.

Answer the following questions and you will be on your way to the ideal feeder for your area:

What type of birds are in your area? You can check out a field guide for your area or do an internet search for example: birds in Southeast or North Carolina.

Which species of birds do you want to attract? Once you have done your research, decide which birds you want to attract. You will more that likely end up with a variety of birds to enjoy.

What type of seed do they prefer? Cardinals, as with most songbirds, love black oiled sunflower seeds. Finches prefer thistle but will eat the sunflower seeds. 

The third thing that birds seek is shelter to raise their new family or to protect them from the bitter cold of winter. There are some species of birds that do not migrate.  By providing birdhouses and nest boxes you will also be helping to preserve some species that are losing their natural habitats. I have several bluebird nestboxes which all types of birds go into when they are allowed to by the bluebirds. We have had 12 new Bluebirds fledged this summer, 4 Brown-headed Nuthatch, too many sparrows, and the precious little Carolina Chickadees. 

Birdwatching is a great family activity that each person, no matter how young or old, can enjoy together.
