A surface piercing is a type of piercing that is not done on any concave or convex part of the body, but on a flat part of the body. Usually, a 90 degree angle barbell is used, and the barbell is inserted underneath your skin. There is an externally threaded ball on both ends of the surface barbell, which is the only part that is seen with a surface piercing. There are many other surface piercings, which consist of single-post barbell piercings, where there is only one ball at the end, and the barbell is flat, like a labret barbell ring. Other places on the body can be pierced such as the hip, stomach (not the navel), neck, back, nape of the neck, hand web, wrist, and chest. Surface piercings are tricky because their rate of success and healing really depends on hygiene and the equipment used for the piercing.
