TO KNIT PLAIN

Having the number of stitches required on the left hand needle, put the right hand needle into the first stitch, throw the yarn over and take it up on the right hand needle. Repeat until all the stitches are on the right hand needle.

TO SLIP AND BIND.

Slip one stitch ; knit the next; pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch as in binding off work.

TO SLIP A STITCH.

Take the stitch from the left hand to the right hand needle without knitting it.

Bring the yarn in front of the right hand needle, which should take up the stitch on the left hand needle, entering at the right side of the yarn in front. Throw the yarn around at the back of the needle as it passes into the stitch, catch it in and take it off.

Be careful always to carry the yarn back of the needle after a purled stitch before knitting a plain stitch.

TO MAKE A STITCH.

Bring the yarn in front of the needle (as in purling) and knit plain.

TO NARROW.

Knit two stitches together as one.

TO BIND OFF.

Either slip or knit the first stitch; knit the next; pass the first or slipped stitch over the second, and repeat as directed.

CROSS TREBLE STITCH.

Make a chain the length required. Throw the wool over the hook twice; take up the second chain stitch back of the hook, on which there will now be four stitches; throw the yarn over and draw through two stitches; throw it over again and take up the second chain stitch beyond the first taken up. Five stitches will now be on the hook. Put the yarn over and draw through two of them; over again and through two more; over again and through two more; over again and through the last two. Now make 1 chain and 1 double crochet in the two loops which lie crosswise.

Begin the next cross the same as the first; thus, - Throw the yarn over twice; and take up the second chain from the last one taken up, and repeat all the other details just given.

LONG CROCHET.

HALF-STITCH RIB.

Make a chain the length required ; work 3 D. C. in the third stitch of chain; make I Sg. C. in the third stitch from the D. C. to fasten the shell in place. Make a chain of 3 stitches; then 3 D. C. in the same stitch with the Sg. C., and fasten the shell as before, in the third stitch from shell. Continue to end of chain.

Turn the work, * make a chain of 3 stitches; make 3 D. C. in the last Sg. C. made in the first row; fasten this shell with a Sg. C. in the loop formed by the chain of 3 in the preceding row. Repeat from * to end of row.

2nd row.Work 1 Sg. C., 2 chain and 4 D. C. in the first Sg. C. of previous row. 1 Sg. C. in the 2 chain of the next shell; 1 Sg. C., 2 chain and 4 D. C. in the next Sg. C. Repeat across the row.

AFGHAN STITCH.

Make a chain the length required; insert the hook in the next to last chain stitch and draw a loop through; leaving- it on the needle. Take up all the stitches in the same way ; then put the yarn over and draw through first one loop; over again and through two loops; over again and through two more, and so until all the loops have been used. The loops thus worked will look like upright stitches along the work. Take up each of these upright stitches and draw a loop through it; leaving each loop on the hook; then work back as in other row. Carefully count the stitches on the hook now and then, so that they will not be unintentionally decreased or increased, as some times the edge stitches seem confused and may accidentally be omitted or taken up twice.

RIBBED AFGHAN STITCH.

Make a chain the length required; pick up each stitch as in plain afghan stitch, and work off the loops in the same manner; as in plain afghan stitch the loops thus worked will look like upright stitches along the work. Take up each of these upright stitches (picking up the stitch from the back) and draw a loop through it; leaving each loop on the hook; then work back as in other row.

FANCY AFGHAN STITCH - continued.

Make a chain the length required; take up and work off stitches as in plain afghan stitch.

2nd row. - Throw the yarn over the hook and pick up two stitches together; repeat this movement to end of row, where the last stitch is taken up singly; work back as in plain afghan stitch.

3rd row. - Throw the yarn around the hook; pass the first upright stitch of the last row; take up the next upright stitch and the slanting one beyond, together; throw the yarn around the hook and take up the next' two similar stitches. Repeat to end of row, also throwing the yarn over before taking up the single loop at the end of row. Work back in plain afghan stitch. Repeat the third row and plain afghan stitch throughout the work.

FANCY AFGHAN STITCH. Made with a Double End Crochet Hook.

Wind the wool into balls, as two balls are used at one time.

Make a chain the length required; take up each stitch as in plain afghan stitch; retaining them on the needle. Turn the work; (fasten the other ball of wool to the other end of work) and take the stitches off the needle with the other hook. With the same hook take the stitches up again; then turn the work; taking them off with the other hook.

Two rows like this form a ridge. Continue working back and forth as directed.

Make a chain the length required.

1st row.—Draw a loop through second stitch of chain ; wrap wool over the hook, draw a loop through the same stitch; * skip 1 stitch; draw a loop through next stitch; wrap wool over and draw a loop through same stitch. Repeat from * to end of row. The stitches will now all be on the hook.

2nd row.—Wrap wool over the hook and draw through 3 loops on hook; * wrap wool over and draw through 4 loops on hook. Repeat from * to end of row; drawing through the last 5 stitches on the hook; chain I stitch.

3rd row.—The loop now on hook should be loose. Draw a loop through first space; wrap wool over hook and draw a loop through same space; * draw a loop through next space; wrap wool over and draw a loop through same space. Repeat from * to end of row, drawing a loop through the two end stitches of the last cluster of preceding row. The stitches will now all be on the hook.

4th row.—Wrap wool over the hook, and draw through one loop; * wrap wool over the hook and draw through four loops. Repeat from * to end of row; drawing wool through the last two loops on the hook; chain I stitch.

5th row.—The loop now on hook should be loose. Draw a loop through first space; wrap wool over the hook, and draw a loop through same space; * draw a loop through next space; wrap wool over the hook and draw a loop through same space. Repeat from * to end of row.

6th row.—Like 2nd row. Repeat from 2nd to 6th rows throughout the entire work.

STAR STITCH.

Make a chain the length required. Draw up a loop through each of five successive stitches; throw the yarn over and draw it through all the stitches on the hook, closing the cluster with a slip stitch ; draw a loop up through the eye formed by the slip stitch; draw a loop up through the back part of the last upright stitch of the star just made; draw a loop up through each of the next three stitches; this will leave six stitches or loops on the hook; draw through these and close as in the preceding star. Repeat to end of chain; break off wool.

2nd row.—Draw the wool through the outer edge of the first star made and make a chain of three; throw the wool over the hook, and bring up a loop through the same stitch. (The yarn is thrown over the hook only for the first stitch at the beginning of each row.) Now take up three stitches, drawing the last loop up through the first stitch, beyond the first eye. (If care is taken to have the last loop of every star, and the one at the end of every row, each drawn up through the first stitch beyond an eye, the work will always come out even.)

Repeat these details until the work is of the dimensions required.

Make a chain the length required, using white wool.

1st row.—Work in D. C. in the 4th stitch of chain; chain 1 stitch; skip 2 stitches; * work 2 D. C. in the next stitch of chain; chain 1 stitch; skip 2 stitches and repeat from * to end of chain.

2nd row.—Chain 3 stitches, * work 2 D. C. in the centre of the shell of 2 D. C. of previous row; chain 1 stitch and repeat from * to end of row. 3rd row.—Like 2nd row.

With color work up and down over these three rows as follows: work I Sg. C. in the first stitch at the beginning of work chain 2 stitches, fasten with a Sg. C. at the top of the D. C. of the 1st row; chain 2 stitches; fasten with a Sg. C. to the top of 2nd row; chain 2 stitches; fasten with a Sg. C. to the top of 3rd row; chain 2 stitches; work 3 D. C. in the centre of the 1st shell of 3rd row; chain 2 stitches; fasten with a Sg. C. to the chain between the shells of 3rd row; chain 2 stitches; fasten to the chain between the shells of 2nd row as before; chain 2 more stitches and fasten to the stitch that was skipped in the chain at the beginning.

NOW work up and down between each shell as in the illustration.

1st row.—Work I Sg. C. in every stitch of chain; break off wool at end of every row.

2nd row.—Like 1st row, always taking the stitch from the back.

3rd row.—Work1 Sg. C. in each of the first 2 stitches; now work 1 Tr. C., stitching down into the top of 3rd stitch of first row; * 1 Sg. C. in each of the next 2 stitches; 1 Tr. C. in the next, stitching down as before and repeat from * to end of row.

4th row.—Work i Sg. C. in each of the first 3 stitches, 1 Tr. C. in the next. This brings the treble back of the one in the preceding row; I Sg. C. in each of the next 2 stitches; the one above the treble must be taken through the stitch; for other stitch take up the back thread. There being 2 stitches between each treble so that in each row the treble will be one stitch back of the treble in the preceding row.

Make a chain the length required.

1st row- Make I Sg. C. in the 1st stitch; take up the next stitch on chain. Keep one stitch on the needle and make 3 chain stitches, the fourth stitch taken through both stitches (this forms a popcorn). Now make 2 Sg. C.; then a popcorn, and continue across the row.

2nd row.—Begin with 3 single crochet stitches; in the next stitch make a popcorn ; make 2 Sg. C.; then a popcorn ; continue across the row; making 2 Sg. C. between each popcorn throughout the entire work.
