Born and raised in Florida in the 1950's. I grew up with Leave it to Beaver, Sea Hunt,Mayberry RFD, & Lassie,I have not sold my soul just to make a dollar and still hold the morals and values of this time as my most cherished possessions.
My family heritage goes back to English loyalist living in the Carolinas before the Revolutionary War and the Infamos wreckers of Key West Fla. As a Licensed U.S. Merchant Marine Captain, I have owned and operated everything from Offshore Swordfish Longliners to Tug and Oil Tows.
After my wife's death, I retired from the sea to pursue my second love: the Art of the Blade,Scrimshaw and Ivory.I have been a Schrimshander and Customizing knives since the 1970's. I was taught the art of forging and tempering blades by my brother, a master blacksmith for over 40 years, who apprenticed with the world famous Ray Nager. My shop is The old carriage house behind our historic home. The was built in 1880 on a campsite of Union General Tecumpsa Sherman on his campiagn to Savannah during the Civil War, known as the "March to the Sea". We are Located approx.30 miles S/E of Chattanooga, Tn. My workplace has no windows or clocks and there is no concept of time. The work is done by hand. There are no computerized, high tech or sophisticated machines in my shop. Be it hours, days, weeks or months to complete a piece. Quality and beauty are what matter, not the time it takes to create.I use predominately American Materials in my Knives with the exception of the Ivory and some exotic woods. When possible I use Pre-WW2 metals for creating my blades. This is because of the superior quality of the hematite ore mined for WWII.
It has also become an obsession with me to locate, buy and preserve our classic American- made knives and other USA made items before they are lost forever to foreign manufactures. Every knife is meticulously cleaned, inspected, and preserved. All work is done by me by hand. I do not attck them with sanders and power tools and use extreme caution to preserve the factory lines and markings. I look at them as irreplaceable museum pieces and treat them accordingly.I see patina for what it is, corrosion and deteriation of the steel; it is not welcome on my pieces unless it is from old oil that has dried on a blade from proper care. This is a labor of love. My goal is to get them into homes were they will be appreciated and given the respect they deserve before they are lost forever. I will Gladly do Custom orders, cleaning and Restorations.Special orders are handled through the store. Just remember I am one man and do not work by today's "hurry up just get it finished" standards.I sell no junk and personally clean and inspect every knife I sell. I believe in Quality over Quantity and back them all with a 100% money back Guarantee. Thank you Capt.Rob. |
