Mobile Antennas
The antenna that you
have on your mobile definitely helps to determine just how far you will get out.
One thing to keep in mind is that all antennas designed to operate on 27 MHz
will work equally well on AM or SSB, (Single Side Band)
There are many different kinds of mounts and places you can put your CB antenna.
Your could stick that antenna just about any place on your vehicle, but some
places have advantages over others.
Antenna Types
Whips
By far the best physical length for a 27 MHz CB antenna which would still be
practical for mobile use would be 2.5 meters (100”) This length is most
popularly mounted on the back bumpers of cars and trucks which gives you greater
gain towards the front. The biggest issue for this type of set up is hitting
limbs and is a bit unsightly - thus not as popular as the rest of the antennas
types.
Loading Coils
A loading coil is a coil of wire imbedded in a plastic cylinder. The loading
coil itself makes up the difference for the missing length. The loading coil is
connected to the hot center conductor of the coax and the steel whip or stinger
that is sticking out of the coil.
Base Loaded Steel Whips
These whips are generally very durable and inconspicuous. While they do not get
out as well as a big 100” whips or top-loaded would. Although they do quite well
for talking local and been used by CBers for years. When mounting a base loaded
antenna keep in mind that the base coil radiates much of your signal so it
should be placed in a positions clear of surrounding metal surfaces. The roof,
hood or trunk lip, or fender are the most common mounting points.
Center or Top Loaded Steel Whips
The center or top loaded whip is the next best thing to a full 100” whip. They
come in many shapes, styles and colors. The loaded coil in the center or near
the top of the antenna is more electrically efficient than base loading or
getting that signal in the air. Stainless steel is the best for long term
durability. An antenna spring at the bottom is always good protection against
low limbs.
Fiberglass Whips
The wire wound fiberglass whip has become very popular in recent years. It comes
in many lengths and colors. The most popular is the 4 foot whip. As a general
rule, the longer the whip is, the better it will get out. Fiberglass whips
generally come tuned up from the factory and need little or no adjustment in
their length.
These antennas have a wire imbedded in the fiberglass that actually dose the
radiating of your CB signal. This wire sometime is wound spirally up the
fiberglass rod, forming a continuous loading coil. Of all the short antennas
available this one gets out the best.
Twin Antennas
Twin or Dual antennas are very popular on big rigs, RVs and other vehicles where
it is not possible to mount a single antenna on the roof. Two identical antennas
are used with a special set of coaxial cables called a co-phase harness. This is
nothing more than two equal lengths of coax that are hooked to the same
connector.
The dual antennas combine together to provide a directional signal and if are
installed 100” apart (mounted on the mirrors) they will get out the best
forwards and backwards.
