WHAT IS A REMAINDER MARK

WHAT IS A REMAINDER MARK?

When you are book shopping on the internet you will see book descriptions stating: "May have Remainder Mark" or "Small Remainder Mark" or "No Remainder Mark". So, what the heck is a Remainder Mark?

Remainder Marks are a mark put on a book when a publishing house decides to clear out its stock of a title. This mark ensures that wholesale book buyers cannot return these books back to the publisher.

If you have ever purchased used books or books in the Bargain Section of a bookstore take a look at some of them you and will probably find a few remainder marks. Most people don't even notice them until they are aware of what a Remainder Mark is.

Book collectors on the other hand know all about Remainder Marks. Because a Remainder Mark alters the book from its original printed version it devalues the book compared to a copy that does not have a remainder mark. If you are purchasing a book online for collector reasons, it is best to confirm with the seller that the book has no marks. Most professional booksellers will list that a book has a Remainder Mark in the description.

Here are some common examples of Remainder Marks:

Remainder Marks come in all shapes and sizes, are usually placed on the top or bottom edge of a book, and are black or red in color. The marks are generally made with a magic marker. They cause no damage to the book and are harmless except to the collector.

Not all Remainder Books contain a remainder mark. Just because a publisher has decided to clear out its warehouse of a title does not mean it will mark the book.

DVDs, CDs and Audio Books can have a "Remainder Scratch". This is a line or scratch through the UPC code on the back of the case or box.
