Chincoteauge Island - A Great Trip for your Horse Lover!

If your daughter or grand-daughter loves horses and ponies - then you MUST take her to Chincoteague Island, Virginia!

Chincoteague Island is a barrier Island located just off the coast of Northern Virgina, with Asseteague Island just a short 100 feet beyond it.

Asseteague Island is a National Wildlife Refuge and is home to free roaming Chincoteague Ponies.   It was the home of "Misty Of Chincoteague" a famous book telling the story of how the ponies came to be on the Island.   And is now home to many many of Misty's descendants.

To visit Asseteague - stay on Chincoteague - which offers plenty of horse themed activities!   We stayed at the Refuge Inn - with a room on the "Pony Side".  The hotel owns ponies, which are penned adjacent to the hotel.

Each morning, our daughter jumped out of bed and pulled back the drapes to "See the Ponies"!!!!!    Here she is feeding them and patting them!

OF course - no trip is complete without some fun surprizes along the way.   Before your trip, shop from my wide selection of horse themed clothing for your daughter (and yourself!).  

Present a top with horses to your daughter to wear as you are leaving for the trip!      Then, present her with Horse Themed PAJAMAS before she goes to bed!     These little extra touches will make your family trip extra special - and extra memorable.

And - here she is at a horse riding lesson!    This lesson was AMAZING - I highly reccomend it for anyone who loves horses!    Even if your child (or you) have no horse riding experience, it will be a great activity and highly memorable.

The pony's name is Doll.  She is very experienced at helping out during riding lessons!  

Our daughter was instructed in how to get the pony to walk, stop, and turn left and right.  She practiced riding her around the ring, stearing her through cones and, finally, had her stepping over boards (well, she tried to anyway!)

She took this lesson at the Chincoteague Pony Center.   The Pony Center also offers pony rides, a pony show in the evening, and shows a film of the Chincoteage Ponies being hearded and then swam across the bay from Asseteague to Chincoteage.

Asseteague Island is a National Wildlife Refuge and is home to free roaming Chincoteague Ponies.  You can see heards of ponies grazing from your car - or - even better - while walking or bike riding.   Definitly take binoculars for each member of your traveling group!

Asseteague Island is also home to the Asseteague National Seashore - a 100% unspoiled section of coastline.   An amazingly clean beach with no built up commotion - just a few simple changing rooms!

The island of Chincoteague is only about 10 square miles.  It offers seafood dining and some shopping.  We found it very comfortable and authentic.  This is not a place taken over by overpriced expensive shops.  

I hope that you and your horse lover will be able to get there, and will enjoy it as much as we did.  We already plan to return later this summer!
