The fashion world has spoken about cufflinks.
In the holiday 2007 edition of Menswear
magazine, writer Gillian Koenig,
in the article "Linked In," wrote
that "Now, with the return to dressing
up, cufflinks are back and growing
in demand."
Koenig
also wrote that in the past it would
have been a difficult to find designers
specializing in cufflinks, but today
that's changed. Tommy Fazio, men's
fashion director at BergdorfGoodman,
which has one of the country's largest
cufflinks collection, said "They're
the new 'It' accessory."
Koenig's
piece, in addition to picturing
some stunning cufflinks from such
designers as Judith Ripka, David
Yurman, Tiffany & Co., Cartier and
Tom Ford, also includes a short
list of tips about cufflinks, whether
they be vintage, retro or designer
styles.
1.
"Aim for understandment." Subtle
is good for cufflinks, but they
also should reflect a person's personality.
So if bold and loud are you, go
for it.
2.
"Expose your cuffs." Koenig writes
that "Cartier's Frederic de Narp
suggests men leave a half-inch to
an inch of shirt cuff showing so
the cufflink is easily exposed."
3.
"Start with classic geometric shapes."
Don't go exotic with your first
pair of cufflinks ... save that
for the second pair (my suggestion).
Also make sure the style of the
cufflinks complements the style
of your suits and shirts.
4.
"Stick with one palette." Try to
keep watch, wedding band (or any
ring) and cufflinks all the same
color, be it silver or gold.
5.
"Save the precious stones for evening."
A little color spices up black and
white; only wear diamond cufflinks
to a black-tie affair, writes Koenig.
For a subtle look, try pearls.
6.
"Gold cufflinks make an easy transition
from day to night." According to
Verdura's Nico Landrigan, opaque
stones are versatile and more masculine
than precious stones.
7.
"Stay relaxed." Koenig quotes Cartier's
de Narp as saying, "neither a jacket
nor a tie is necessary to accessorize
a beautiful shirt with cufflinks."
8.
"Weight matters." Koenig suggests
trying to strike a balance: don't
wear cufflinks that are too cumbersome
or too flimsy or thin.
9.
"Choose quality over quanity." Koenig
suggests that when searching for
cufflinks, make them special.
Just
after the new year, MSN also noticed
a renewed interest in cufflinks
and included the subject in its
"A-List Searches." MSN said cufflinks
are giving encores in Web searches.
Pretty cool!!!
