Gems~ Is it real or fake?

Did you know that many gems (including rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc.) are dyed, or color enhanced?

Remember, most rocks when they are pulled out of the ground look, well, like rocks.

After rough gems are mined, in order to be used for jewelry they need to be cut and polished to look their best. Many stones are color enhanced to give the bold color we crave.

Beware of any stones that are imitation, faux, or "reconstituted", which basically means a small fraction of material was used and mixed with other material,then formed into what looks like an original stone.

Many gems are also heat treated or stabilized.

Turquoise is often stabilized, because it tends to be rather fragile naturally.

If you are concerned about conserving mother nature, many faux gems are available and are less expensive.

PEARLS

Most ladies will agree~ pearls are always in style!

Many people believe pearls represent love, happiness and good fortune.

Did you know? Freshwater pearls can take a year to two years to form a single pearl.

Pearls that are naturally grown are unique.

Value

Luster is defined by the beautiful reflections of light from the surface of the pearl. Generally, the size, roundness, and more lustrous a pearl the more valuable it is.

Jewelry which contains closely matched pearls, is more expensive because of the time it takes to sort and match the pearls.

Pearl Care

Pearls are not gemstones, they are organic and require special care.

Take care of your natural pearls! They are susceptible to damage, PEARLS SHOULD BE THE LAST THING YOU PUT ON and SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF FIRST when you are home.

Never spray perfume, cosmetics or hair spray when you wear pearl jewelry.

A pearl's soft surface can be easily scratched

Do not wear pearls when applying cosmetics and perfumes.

Do not wear in water, pool, etc.

Pearls need to “breathe” but avoid extreme heat and sunlight.

For cleaning, wipe your pearls GENTLY with a soft damp cloth, or have a jeweler clean it professionally.

Variety

There is a large variety of pearls to choose from:

* shapes ( round, rice, button, teardrop, petal, long biwa)

* colors ( white, pink, peacock, peach, mauve, green, etc.)

* textures ( smooth, bumpy )

For a classic look, round pearls in one color are traditonal.

For a modern look, different shapes and colors are playful and fun!
