It's only 2 weeks until Halloween. And then just a short month until we celebrate Thanksgiving with football and turkey and pie. And fast on Thanksgiving's heels will come Christmas. Wow! Where did the summer go? It seems like we were just thinking about the end of the school year and what to do for summer vacation and suddenly it's all about warm sweaters and holiday decorations.
What holiday traditions will your family continue this year? For us it is football and decorating our holiday tree on Thanksgiving Day. And then it's exchanging meaningful holiday ornaments on Christmas Day that will sparkle on next year's tree. And Christmas dinner always finishes up with English trifle and jam tarts, my mom's specialty and a reminder for her of her British roots and childhood memories.
One tradition from my childhood that has always been near and dear to my heart is that we opened our Christmas gifts from Great Aunt Helen on Christmas Eve. Those gifts were always books and we would snuggle in our beds reading away while waiting for Santa Claus to visit. Great Aunt Helen introduced us to The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, magical places and times in fantasy novels, classics like The Great Gatsby and one of my childhood favorites, A Wrinkle in Time.
What holiday traditions from your childhood do you still honor and cherish?
