About Us

Each and every item with an Eastern Mountain Sports logo is the product of countless hours in the field and thousands of conversations with customers about what they like, what they want, and what they can't live without. Our product development teams are an effective mix of highly skilled climbers, paddlers, backpackers, and cyclists who love creating solutions for their own outdoor challenges. This knowledge and experience, along with our belief that high-performance gear shouldn't be ultra expensive, enables us to deliver the best of all worlds to outdoor athletes of all abilities.

It all started in 1967 when two Massachusetts rock climbers decided to do something about the lack of quality climbing gear in traditional sporting goods stores. Alan McDonough and Roger Furst opened a single store in Wellesley, MA selling the climbing rope and harnesses they couldn't find anywhere else, along with a hand-picked selection of camping equipment that could be efficiently carried deep into the wilderness and trusted to perform.

As the customers came, so did the need for qualified climbing instruction for both beginner rock climbers looking to getting started, and experienced alpinists seeking new challenges. Less than a year after opening the first store, Alan and Roger started Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School in North Conway, NH - now the oldest climbing school in the East.

In 1979, Alan and Roger left to pursue new opportunities but their "Do something" philosophy is an unshakable part of our culture. Today, Eastern Mountain Sports operates 64 retail stores in 13 states. We've grown a lot, but we're still a local gear shop at heart. We make our buying decisions based on our own experiences in the outdoors as well as the comments and suggestions we receive from our customers.

Eastern Mountain Sports has never aspired to be the biggest outdoor retailer in the business, just the most trusted.

Methods
We only accept immediate payment through the eBay checkout system.

We only accept payment via US PayPal accounts. PayPal allows you to pay using a major credit card or direct transfer from your checking account. Sign up for a PayPal account by clicking here.

Sales Tax
We are legally required to collect sales tax on items shipped to states and localities in which Eastern Mountain Sports currently does business in a physical location (Nexus).

Shipping Policy
At Eastern Mountain Sports, we work hard to get your order out the door and on its way as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the best shipping method for your order, please contact Customer Service at 855-871-6069 or Ask Seller a question.

Please note that at this time we are only able to ship to the contiguous 48 states. We cannot offer shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, APO/FPO/PO boxes or international locations, including Canada.

General Information
You'll be prompted for a shipping method at Checkout. Generally, you will have the option to select faster delivery (such as 2nd Day or Next Day).

For these shipping methods, your order must be received and clear credit authorization by 12 noon EST, or your order may not be processed until the following business day.

Shipping costs are based on the shipping method of choice and the value of the total order. Your total shipping charges will automatically compute during checkout prior to the completion of your order.

Business days are Monday-Friday, excluding federal holidays within the United States.

We offer several shipping methods for deliveries in the United States. Below are estimated shipping charges and delivery times for each shipping method to the 48 of the contiguous states.

    Most items may be shipped to the 48 contiguous United States via Standard Ground service. You can expect your order to arrive within 2-10 full business days. Delivery will occur Monday-Friday, excluding federal holidays within the United States.
  • 2nd Day Air, (2-3 business days)
    Most items may be shipped to the 48 contiguous United States via 2nd Day Air service. You can expect your order to arrive within 2-3 full business days. Delivery will occur Monday-Friday, excluding federal holidays within the United States. Your order must be received and clear credit authorization by 12:00 p.m. (noon) EST or your order may not be processed until the following business day. Please note: No Saturday or Sunday delivery is available with this shipping option. For delivery on Saturday please select "Saturday Delivery."
  • Next Day Air, (1-2 business days)
    Most items may be shipped to the 48 contiguous United States via Next Day Air service. You can expect your order to arrive within 1-2 full business days. Delivery will occur Monday-Friday, excluding federal holidays within the United States. Signature required for delivery. Your order must be received and clear credit authorization by 12:00 p.m. (noon) EST or your order may not be processed until the following business day. Please note: No Saturday or Sunday delivery is available with this shipping option. For delivery on Saturday please select "Saturday Delivery."

Receipt of Boats or Cargo Boxes

  • Certain oversized items can only be shipped only via a common carrier truck line (i.e. UPS Freight or NEMF). When receiving these goods, please visually inspect the condition of the item before signing the freight bill. If any damage exists it must be noted on the delivery company's freight bill. In addition, please call Customer Service at 888-463-6367 while the delivery driver is still present. At this time, boats and cargo boxes cannot be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or Canada.
Alaska or Hawaii

Some products that require special shipping considerations due to their size, weight, or other factors are subject to shipping surcharges. Return Policy
Our first priority is your complete satisfaction with your Eastern Mountain Sports purchase. If you are dissatisfied for any reason and have your original store receipt or web invoice, we will exchange or repair the item in question or provide a full refund.

We will provide your refund using the same method of payment that you used to purchase the item.

Returns without an original store receipt or web invoice may be eligible for merchandise credit, which will be based on how much you used the item and how long it's been since your purchase. Credit amount will be determined upon receipt of the return. All returns without a receipt require a valid state-issued ID, military ID, or passport. You can return your purchase at any Eastern Mountain Sports store or by mail, regardless of whether you bought it in-store or online. If you want to return it by mail, please follow the steps outlined in our Return Instructions below.

Please refer to the Return Instructions on the packing slip when returning your item. The item must be returned in good condition, in original boxes (whenever possible), and with all paperwork, parts and accessories to ensure credit.

Returning an Item
You can shop with confidence at Eastern Mountain Sports. Simply follow the steps below to return a product to Eastern Mountain Sports if you are dissatisfied in any way. Instructions are also outlined on the packing slip with your shipped items.

  1. Pack the item(s) securely in the original product packaging, if possible. Please include all paperwork, parts, and accessories. All items must be returned in good condition to ensure credit.
  2. Enclose the bottom perforated portion of the original packing slip with the item. Please keep the top portion for your records. If you cannot send your packing slip, please include your order number, billing name, and address with the item(s).
  3. Before sending your return shipment, please remove all extra labels from the outside of the package.
  4. Send the return package to the following address (unless your packing slip directs otherwise*):

  • All return shipping charges must be prepaid. We cannot accept C.O.D. deliveries.
  • It is recommended that you use UPS or Insured Parcel Post for your return.
  • Keep the Return Tracking Number for your return package to monitor delivery status.
  • You can expect a refund in the same form of payment originally used for the purchase, within 30 days of our receiving the returned order.
  • Credit for gift returns will be issued to the original purchaser.
  • You will be refunded the return shipping cost if the return is a result of a manufacturing defect or shipping error.
