What is faded grandeur?
My impressions of items with faded grandeur .....
- An item which has had a past, isn't in pristine condition, and shows its history to some extent.
- Something that has had its glory days, and now is losing some of its grandeur - flaking paint, chipped moulding and corners, faded fabrics, crumbling stone, rusty metals, but now coming into its own as an attractive piece still with its elegance, even if it is no longer perfect.
- It could be a building, or an interior, or even just a item as a sweeping staircase. This could also be the most beautiful piece of hand embroidery on a linen panel, now with its hem coming undone, or a now-tarnished silver napkin ring still with all its lovely detail, or a huge heavy chateau key, now rusted.
In my mind many different sorts of items can have faded grandeur!! How about a car?
The photo above was taken in our garden shortly after we bought our house here in rural France, a combination of Mayor's office and village school. This is the 'barn find' 9 seater classic car we found in the garage - Citroen Traction Avant Commerciale - before her clean-up and restoration. Note the nose of her sister still in the garage - Citroen Traction Avant Familiale - bizzarely painted a lovely shade of green!
In this state they are both the epitome of 'faded-grandeur' !!!
