What is a fat quarter? A fat quarter is a piece of fabric cut to the measurement of 18" x 21" (approx.). It is first cut off the bolt as a half-yard, then that half-yard is cut at the center fold, making two fat quarters.

Why are fat quarters so popular? A fat-quarter gives you a nice-size piece of fabric to work with. Many quilt pattern designers write their patterns with the option of using fat quarters. Fabric shops frequently sell fat quarters in coordinated sets, making less work for the buyer.
