Alfred Bulltop Stormalong
A legendary hero of whaling men of the Maine coast. He was the greatest seafaring man ever known. He stood four fathoms(1 fathom=6 feet) tall and, alone, could turn a wheel that required 35 steersmen. He ate ostrich eggs for breakfast, took his soup in a dinghy, and picked his teeth with an 18-foot oar. During the first trip he ever made in a whaling ship, he singlehandedly caught so many whales that every man aboard ship was able to retire from the sea for life at the end of the voyage. He changed ships every time a bigger one came into sight. His greatest ship was the Courser. The English Channel was too narrow for her, so her sides were soaped to let her slip through. She barely made it. The Cliffs of Dover scraped off all the soap, and ever since then have been called the White Cliffs of Dover. All the bays on the American coast lines are dents made by the Courser bumping into the continent. During a Carribean storm, the Courser drove clean through the Isthmus and created the Panama Canal. It was Stormalong who scared all the whales out of warmer waters into the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. Once he dove overboard and fought a kraken (an octopus) tying its arms in knots, he left it helpless on the sea floor. He died in Mobile Bay and was lowered into the water on a silver chain.
