There are some simple techniques you can use to save precious time without having to use Advanced Search. Most of these work just as well with search engines such as Google.
Exclude as many words as possible, especially words which are likely to be abbreviated or misspelled. For specific postcard searches, try typing the name of the city only.
Use an asterisk as a wildcard to represent a string of characters / punctuation. For example, for words that end in "s" - with or without an apostrophe - always replace the "s" and apostrophe with an asterisk, so that you'll see all the listings you're looking for regardless of sellers' punctuation habits.
No: Sault Sainte Marie Michigan Yes:Sault
No: Smith's Westside Country Club Atlanta Georgia Yes:Smith* Country Atlanta
No: Chevy Corvette Yes:Corvette
Parenthesis are a powerful tool for covering all bases and condensing several searches down to one. They may be used multiple times in the same search. Use "-" to exclude listings which contain particular word(s). Make sure you're searching in the proper category.
No: Pre-1920 postcards from my home town Yes:Yourhometownsington (190*,191*,00*,10*,undivided,divided,UDB,DB)
No: 1950's - 60's Motels &hotels in your favorite towns Yes:(Tijuana, Tulsa, Toledo) (motel,hotel,lodge,inn) (195*,196*,50*,60*,chrome)
No: Ft. Worth Texas 1950's motels and restaurants Yes:Worth (ft*,fort) (motel,lodge,inn,restaurant,eatery) (195*,50*,'5*,chrome)
No: Chevys from the 1950's excluding Corvette, Bel Air and pickups Yes:Chev* (195*,5*) -corvette -bel* -pick* -not
Try searching titles AND descriptions first, then if too many search results, try the search again without "titles and descriptions" checked. Once you have the perfect search, you might want to click "Save this search" and choose the "Email Me" option (even if there are zero search results!) Mix the above with a dash of experimentation and 2 cups of intuition, and you too will be a lean mean finding machine! |
