Many of my customers have raised the question : "How do I protect myself from buying fraudulent items ". It is not difficult to spot a problem before you buy if you know what to look for.
The following are tips to follow (before) purchasing and item :
(1) Always read the seller's feedback. If he or she has (many) negatives be very cautious. The higher the feedback score the better. You should feel more comfortable buying from a seller who has a 500 feedback score versus someone with a 3 score.
(2) Look at the sellers location. Many fradulent items are made in countries outside the U.S. For example if someone in Thailand is selling a leather jacket for a third of the cost it sells for in the U.S. STOP AND ASK YOURSELF WHY ?
(3) Read the ENTIRE auction or listing. If you have a question contact the seller, if they do not respond again ask yourself why ? Is the description complete or is it lacking information ? Is there a photo of the item ? don't assume anything without verifying it with the seller.
(4) Packaging is very important when spotting a fake. If an item is being sold as (NEW) without it's original packaging or tags there is a very good chance it is a fake. Counterfeiters rarely duplicate tags and labels, it is to expensive and time consuming.
(5) Most frequently faked items within the 100th anniversay category are : LEATHER JACKETS, KEY CHAINS, tee shirts, PINS, caps, GOLD KEYS, lighters, wallets, BELT BUCKLES, glasses, and medallions. Again always look for the tags or packaging and you will be fine.
(6) There are many, many scams out there. These people are very clever and are always coming up with new ways to seperate you from your money. If you see a $20,000 dollar motorcyle at a "buy it now price" of $5000 (THINK). NEVER send a seller money to an address other than the one listed in the auction or store listing (NEVER). I know it sounds ridiculous but everyday buyers get taken because they get excited, anxious and don't take the time to investigate. You've heard it a thousand times, IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE ???? Investigate, ask questions, and most of all THINK before you buy....
(7) If you are purchasing something of great value have it insured. A good seller will insist on insurance. Also ask if a tracking number will be available and what type of mailing service is being used. Priority mail is always better than parcel post, much faster and more reliable. These questions should all be spelled out in the sellers auction or listing. Insurance is very inexpensive and is the best form of protection.
