Hoodia Gordonii has suddenly come to the attention of public through published reports by respected news outlets including CBS's 60 Minutes, the BBC, ABC and the New York Times. Hoodia is a genus of succulent plants in the family Apocynaceae that is widely used traditionally by the San people of southern Africa not only as an appetite suppressant, but also as a thirst quencher and as a cure for severe abdominal cramps, hemorrhoids, tuberculosis, indigestion, hypertension and diabetes. The excitement over the properties of this plant is much justified. Hoodia Gordonii has been shown in numerous studies to effectively suppress appetite without side effects. This excitement has led to an explosion of products containing, or claiming to contain Hoodia Gordonii and many, many scams. Of particular concern, is the advent of what has come to be called 20:1 extract.
True 20:1 Refining
The patented process by which Hoodia Gordonii is rendered into a 20 to 1 (20:1) extract is simple. Basically, Hoodia Gordonii is allowed to dry and is ground into a powder. Alcohol is added to this powder and it is allowed to disolve componets of Hoodia Gordonii, leaving behind cellulose and other "non-essential" componets. The alcohol and disolved particles are then drained from the mixture, and the alcohol is then evaporated off. What is left is a concentrated powder. Using this process, it takes 20 parts of raw Hoodia Gordonii to render 1 part 20:1 extract. The cost to make a 20:1 is prohibitive. Hoodia Gordonii is an endangered plant. It takes 4 years to mature. It is currently being cultivated for export, but is highly regulated as an export to prevent damage to the native wild Hoodia Gordonii population. From this standpoint alone Hoodia Gordonii is a very expensive raw material. In a 20:1 extract you would use 20kgs of Hoodia Gordonii to make 1, so you would throw away 19kgs of very expensive Hoodia Gordonii. This would make a 20:1 extract 19 times more expensive than a 1:1 mixture. Yet, you'll see on the Internet these 20:1 extract products are marketed far cheaper than the Pure Hoodia 1:1 ratio products.
No one is selling Hoodia Gordonii extract , as it would be violating the patent held by CSIR (which has been leased to Phytopharm, who in turn have leased it to Unilever). Any company claiming to sell a Hoodia extract had better watch their step – apart from misleading consumers, Phytopharm and Unilever are unlikely to ignore such blatant patent theft.
20:1 False Claims
We've found a number of companies offering an "explaination" of their so called "20:1" process. They claim that Hoodia Gordonii contains excessive moisture, that must be drained off to make it a concentrated powder. In drying out their Hoodia Gordonii, it is reduced by a ratio of 20:1.
This reduction is water weight, and has nothing to do with the true "concentrating" of Hoodia Gordonii. It is simply 1:1 Hoodia Gordonii that has been made into a dried powder, a necessary process to put any product into a capsule. Remember, using a true 20:1 process this dried powder would then be reduced by the previously mentioned process by an additional 20 to 1.
These companies are then claiming, falsely, that their product is concentrated and is 20 times more powerful than whole Hoodia Gordonii. These manufacturers will make claims like 1200 mg of Hoodia Gordonii (as 60 mg of 20:1 extract) when in reality, you are purchasing 60 mg of Hoodia Gordonii 1:1.
Hoodia is Hoodia, right?
Some manufacturers of Hoodia products, are going another route. They are offering Hoodia products that use a form of Hoodia other than Hoodia Gordonii. Hoodia Gordonii is the only variety that has demonstrated the ability to suppress appetite. Hoodia is not necessarily Hoodia Gordonii. Watch out!
What does this mean to you, the consumer?
It means, you are getting ripped off. Don't be a victim of these scam artists.
Remember:
1. A true 20:1 extract requires 20 times the amount of raw Hoodia Gordonii as a 1:1 ratio. As such, their production cost for their material alone should be 20 times higher than a competing 1:1 product, not cheaper. Add to this the cost of the alcohol required for the process, and the added staffing and production costs and the cost can be as much as 30 times higher. If a true 20:1 process is being used it is finacially impossible to compete on the basis of price with a 1:1 product. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
2. Any manufacturer willing to make claims like this are likely to cheat you in other ways as well.
3. Purchase only from reputable companies, that provide certifications for their products.
