Individuals taking SSRI anti-depressants should consult a physician before taking AMORYN. Combining SSRI medications with the 5-HTP in AMORYN may increase the risk of developing a condition called serotonin syndrome. Individuals who wish to take AMORYN with their current SSRI medication should do so only with the guidance of the prescribing physician. Individuals who wish to stop taking their current SSRI medication and begin taking AMORYN should consult their doctor about the best way to do so. (Discontinuing an SSRI "cold turkey" can cause uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. It's best to wean yourself off the SSRI by gradually tapering down the dose over many weeks. Consult your doctor for more information.) Unless a doctor says otherwise, AMORYN should not be taken less than seven (7) days after discontinuing an SSRI.
Tricyclics
Including Elavil® (amitriptyline), Tofranil® (imipramine)

Individuals taking tricyclics should consult a physician before taking AMORYN.
Oral Contraceptives
AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraception (i.e. birth control pills). The Hypericum extract in AMORYN increases the activity of the liver enzyme that breaks down estrogen-related compounds. This may reduce the availability of the contraceptive medication, resulting in decreased efficacy. Women taking oral contraception should consult the prescribing physician before taking AMORYN.
Anticoagulants
Including Coumadin® (warfarin)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of warfarin and certain other anticoagulant medications. AMORYN should be taken with anticoagulant medication only under the close supervision of a physician.
Beta-Blockers
Including atenolol (Tenormin®)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of beta-blockers commonly used to treat hypertension and angina pectoris. AMORYN should be taken with beta-blocker medications only under the close supervision of a physician.
Calcium-Channel Blockers
Including diltiazem (Cardizem®, Dilacor®), verapamil (Calan®, Isoptin®), nifedipine (Adalat®, Procardia®)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of calcium-channel blockers commonly used to treat angina. AMORYN should be taken with calcium-channel blockers only under the close supervision of a physician.
Cardiac Glycosides
Including digoxin (Lanoxin®)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of digoxin and certain other glycosides commonly used to treat heart failure and atrial fibrillations. AMORYN should be taken with cardiac glycosides only under the close supervision of a physician.
Chemotherapy and Other Anti-Cancer Drugs
Including irinotecan, paclitaxel, Gleevac® (imatinib), VePesid® (etoposide)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of certain anti-cancer drugs, including certain types of chemotherapy. AMORYN should be taken with anti-cancer drugs only under the close supervision of a physician.
Immunosuppressants

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of cyclosporine and certain immunosuppressants commonly used prevent rejection of transplanted organs. AMORYN should not be taken with immunosuppressant medications.

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of NNRTIs commonly used for the treatment of HIV. AMORYN should be taken with NNRTIs only under the close supervision of a physician.
Protease Inhibitors
Including Agenerase® (amprenavir), Crixivan® (indinavir), Fortovase® (saquinavir), Invirase® (saquinavir) Kaletra® (lopinavir, ritonavir), Lexiva® (fosamprenavir), Norvir® (ritonavir), Reyataz® (atazanavir), Viracept® (nelfinavir)

AMORYN may reduce the effectiveness of protease inhibitors commonly used for the treatment of HIV. AMORYN should be taken with protease inhibitors only under the close supervision of a physician.

Triptans
Individuals taking triptans should consult a physician before taking AMORYN.

In most cases, MELLODYN can be safely combined with prescription sedative medications, but as a precaution you should discuss the issue with your doctor.
THYROID MEDICATIONS
The Lemon Balm in MELLODYN may interfere with the action of prescription thyroid hormones and other thyroid-regulating medications (including Synthroid® [levothyroxine]). Consult a physician before taking MELLODYN if you're currently taking hormonal thyroid medication.

Children with epilepsy and/or other severe neurological conditions should take MELLODYN only under the supervision of a physician. The melatonin in MELLODYN may increase the risk of seizures in epileptic children.
