Grading Books
(We use the industry standard.)
Fine = New. Never read as it is from the publisher.
Very Good = Without flaws, but read so that it loses some of that crispness. Any flaws such as a nick here or there are noted.
Good = Well, Good is not good at all in the book trade. It is not in collector's condition unless upper grades are very scarce. It is very readable. If interested in content, a good book is a good inexpensive choice.
Reading Copy = It is exactly that. A copy to read, but certainly not in good condition. May have markings or have tattered covers, but the pages are intact and may have several bathtub readings left in it.
Poor = Nothing I would sell. Pages may be missing or cutout. The book is disintegrating.
Disbound = Usually used on antiquarian (over 100 years old). Covers are there, but not attached to binding.
We use variant gradients of the above as some books do not fit into the specific category. So, we grade the book and dustjacket separately and we also use plus and minus or a phrase such as "good plus to very good minus."
