Spring has almost sprung here in Western NY! I have been busy potting up the early birds of my garden for sale. My perennials should be ready for sale by the first week of May! In the meantime I still have plenty of seeds that can be sown right now for a late autumn display of blooms! I have some that require patience and some seeds that practically grow themselves!!
If you have never grown plants from seeds it can be a very rewarding and inexpensive way to get lots of plants in a hurry!
Over a decade ago I found that I had a knack for germinating the easy plants but then they would get scraggly and die. So much for my bout with windowsill gardening. I had no idea what I was doing wrong! I had my soiless potting mix, I had my sterile container, seeds, water spritzer and even a heating pad for those more difficult seeds. I eventually bought grow lights. I thought I would be guaranteed success! Well, not so. It took a second season to find out that those grow lights need to be practically on top of those seeds to produce sturdy stalks! Once I figured that out I had a much higher success rate while I eagerly awaited spring!
After several moves around the United States, it has been a worthwhile adventure to start each new garden with seeds from my past plants. I hope you will enjoy the immense satisfaction of growing your own plants from seeds as well.
