Diamond Color

When jewelers speak of a diamond's color, they are usually referring to the presence or absence of color in white diamonds. Color is a result of the composition of the diamond, and it never changes over time. Because a colorless diamond, like a clear window, allows more light to pass through it than a colored diamond, colorless diamonds emit more sparkle and fire. The formation process of a diamond ensures that only a few, rare diamonds are truly colorless. Thus the whiter a diamond's color, the greater its value. Diamonds graded G through I show virtually no color that is visible to the untrained eye

Selecting Color

Diamonds graded D through F are naturally the most valuable and desirable because of their rarity. Such diamonds are a treat for the eyes of anyone. But you can still obtain very attractive diamonds that are graded slightly less than colorless. And diamonds graded G through I show virtually no color that is visible to the untrained eye. If your setting is white gold or platinum, you may wish to opt for a higher color grade than if the setting is yellow gold. And while a very, very faint hint of yellow will be apparent in diamonds graded J through M, this color can often be minimized by carefully selecting the right jewelry in which to mount your diamond. Keep in mind that, while most people strive to buy the most colorless diamond they can afford, there are many people who actually prefer the warmer glow of lower-color diamonds.

Choosing the right Diamond Color for you may not be high on your priority list, but it should be. When it comes to the beauty and added sparkle that Color brings to a Diamond, you'll see that Diamond Color is extremely important. Do not dismiss it.

Color Grade D

D is the highest color grade and is reserved for a truly colorless diamond. It is completely colorless to the naked eye and much sought after because it is so rare.

Color Grade E

E grade diamonds are almost perfectly colorless, with only microscopic traces of color which can only be identified by diamond experts.

Color Grade F

F grade diamonds are almost totally colorless, with only minute hints of color which can only be detected by experienced gemologists.

Color Grade G

G grade diamonds appear nearly colorless to non diamond experts. This grade offers excellent value for money.

Color Grade H

H grade diamonds have a very slight tinge of color which is only perceptible when evaluated next to a colorless diamond. They appear nearly colorless to non diamond professionals and offer an excellent investment.

Color Grade I

I grade diamonds have very slight color traces which are only evident when compared to a colorless diamond. To non diamond professionals they appear nearly colorless.

Clarity is a term used to describe the absence or presence of flaws inside or on the surface of a diamond or other gemstone. A perfect stone with perfect clarity--clearness--is rare, and most flaws that do exist in jewelry grade diamonds cannot be seen without looking at stones through a jeweler's magnifying loupe.
