General Interest

I love vintage sewing patterns. I know you do, too. People who work with old sewing patterns know that there have been several sizing chart changes, for misses sizes, throughout the years,… so choosing the right size of pattern can be tricky. I’ve compiled these sizing charts to help you compare today’s sizes with sizing charts of the past.  Although different companies had different sizing charts, years ago, I tried to make this as accurate as possible. I hope you find this guide useful in deciding what size of vintage pattern to choose.

MISSES SIZING CHART CIRCA 1939 TO 1957     ALL MEASUREMENTS ARE IN INCHES

 SIZE          10      11       12      13      14      15      16       18        20      40

Sometime in 1957, there was a sizing chart change for ladies sizes.

MISSES SIZING CHART 1957 TO 1967

SIZE          9          10         11         12         13         14         15         16         18         20

Then in 1968, there was the final sizing chart change. These are the current sizing charts.

MISSES SIZING CHARTS 1968 TO NOW

SIZE             4          6          8          10          12       14       1 6        18        20       22        24

BUST         29.5     30.5      31.5       32.5        34       36        38        40        42       44        46

So, if you wear a size 14 today, you would need to choose a size 16 vintage 1966 groovy dress pattern or a size 16 or 18 vintage 1949 fantastic blouse pattern. Hope this helps. Let me know of any suggestions to make this guide better and easier. Linda
