Grandpa's Little Buddy
This page is devoted to my Grandson Robert. Born July 22nd, 2004 7 lbs 8 oz.
My wife bought me a book written by Billy Crystal that he wrote to his daughter called
"I Already Know I Love You"
I gave it to Robert as his 1st christmas present from me. The letter below is what I wrote to him on the inside cover for him to read someday when he is older, in case I'm not still around.

Dear Robert,
You're finally here! My first Grandson. Your Grandma and I have waited 32 years for you, and it's even better than we imagined.
This is Christmas Eve 2004, you're 5 months old, and you and your big sister are asleep as we get everything ready for your 1st Christmas. Your mom is holding you on the couch, and your Dad and Grandma are wrapping the last of the presents. As usual I'm sure Grandma is worried that there isn't enough food for everybody that's coming tomorrow (we'll be eating leftovers for a week) and the house isn't quite clean enough yet, but somehow she always manages to make Christmas perfect for everyone.
Every night I come into your room while you're asleep to check on you and your big sister. I watch for a while as you sleep so peacefully, and the contented look on your face tells me that somehow you know how much we all love you. If I wait long enough, you usually smile in your sleep and I hope that you're dreaming about something I said or a memory of a time when we were together.
I think about how you will grow up. When your Dad and I teach you how to catch a ball, ride a bike, catch a fish, handle your first bully. I wonder how you will handle your first date, your first kiss, your first broken heart. I wonder if you will always be the same sweet boy you are now.
I think about the time when your folks will get their own place and move out and take you away from me. I think about when you are grown up and whether you'll have children of your own some day. I wonder if I'll still be here to see it.
I was there when your Mom told Grandma you were on the way, and I've loved you every minute since then. I was there in the room with Mom and Dad and Grandma when you were being born, and have been lucky enough to spend every day with you so far as you grow up. Every day you get stronger and smarter, and we have the fun of watching you as you figure out how to do new things. I never tire of watching your smile light up the room.
I was here for your first Christmas, and wait patiently for your first steps, your first words. I want to watch as you grow up, but hope it doesn't happen too quickly.
It's early Christmas morning now, and everyone else is asleep as I write this. In an hour or two everyone will be up opening presents. Nobody could ever give me a better present than having you be my grandson.
Love,
Grandpa
