"To work magic is to weave the unseen forces into form; to soar beyond sight; to explore the uncharted dream realm of the hidden reality." -Starhawk

From the beginning of time there have been many born with an innate knowledge of the worlds beyond our five senses, and a ravenous hunger to walk and work within the magickal realms. Some may have been born with the gift of psychic vision, while others may have come into this world with extensive past life knowledge of herbs and spell casting. A few among us are ancient souls, continuously walking the path of spirits and magick, and each lifetime growing stronger and stronger in our craft. In the hustle and bustle of a modern world that is continuously getting so far removed from the magickal world, we are a rare breed; often misunderstood and terribly exploited. The Internet is a powerful tool, and by it's very nature it is a magickal one. It has the power to connect us in ways that our ancestors never dreamed of, but it also has the power to warp and twist the magickal world in ways our ancestors would be rolling in their grave over. This article will briefly explore the age of Internet auctions and the intricacies of how they can become disconnected from authentic magick and the collecting of occult curios.

The occult embraces mystical practices and traditions which have historically served as alternatives to the more mainstream traditions. These often include underground societies and other groups compelled to explore the hidden aspects of our lives and of humanity. Though the supernatural is traditonally ascribed to occult ideas, religious miracles are typically supernatural claims. So are curses, spells, divination, and various states of consciousness and methods of enhancing perception seen in many world religions. It is my belief that everything beyond our banal senses is magick. As human beings, we use only a miniscule portion of our brain. I believe that when we move beyond and seek to explore the unused portions of our psyche, we can touch and taste magick to it's fullest. Life itself is magick, if you live your life magickally and with an awareness of the things we cannot see. As the rush and stress of 21st century culture closes in around us, magick can seem very far away--almost unreal, or the stuff of fairytales. If only we knew how much embracing the magick that is in and beyond this world could help us in our every day lives!

"That's the thing with magic. You've got to know it's still here, all around us, or it just stays invisible to you." -Charles de Lint

But people are starting to wake up and search for the magick. With all of our computers, ipods, myspacing, facebooking, ebaying, and e-mailing---we are still searching for something. Whether it is something to let us know that magick is alive or something magickal to affect our lives, we are searching for something to make us feel the magick of living. We are lucky to live in times where magick is available by simply searching for it. Countless books, articles, and magickal objects can be had at the push of a button. The stigma of witchcraft and the magick arts has also dropped off to the point where practitioners do not have to worry about being put to death for their talents, beliefs, or the superstitions of others. Same as it is been throughout history, life presents us with the opportunity to seek out practitioners of the magick arts---but this time, with only a few clicks on a keyboard and some searching around. A whole new world has also opened up in the arena of paranormal and haunted objects. Whereas in the past these items may have only been available to a select few, now they can be made available for anyone willing to part with and anyone willing to collect magickally affected items. This is wonderful, but it also makes it tremendously easy for the artists to be exploited as well as those who are seeking their services. Not to mention the twisting and warping of casting methods that have been in existence for centuries. With the conveinence of a point and click culture, the magick arts are just as affected as anything else. I will present here some random thoughts regarding how internet auctions have the ability to exploit true magickal pracitioners and genuine collectors of paranormal items---as well as seekers and buyers. This is based on what I have witnessed in my personal searching and discovery of the myriad metaphysical offerings available at auction

"The internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow" -Bill Gates

How centuries of spell craft are becoming exploited:

* The Lost Arts Are Getting More Lost: Those who work in accordance with the ancient ways of handcrafted items, rootwork, scent work, and spellcast handicrafts are becoming replaced by those selling Wal-mart rings from "witch estates". Or (something I noticed on Ebay) they are buying old looking rings from Tibetan or tribal jewelry wholesalers and selling them as "ancient". As I explained in a previous guide, spellcasting is extremely hard work. Those of us who practice the craft understand the importance of handmade items, talismans, and amulets. A good rule of thumb is that if it looks like something that came out of a jewelry case or a Tibetan jewelery wholesaler, then it's most likely not a power item. Power items are almost always one of a kind and they can rarely be replicated exactly- except by the original caster. There are also many commercially produced oils, spell kits, candles and such. While these can be helpful aides, they in no way compare to items made by hand in a sorcerers craft room.

* Magick Gets Turned To Nonsense: Many metaphysical sellers feel that they can make up any old mumbo jumbo that they want and call it magick. This flies in the face of centuries of spell casting, religion, and arcane knowledge. If you cannot actively look up some portions of the listing in Google and find that the people, practices, and/or places exist, then chances are that the listing is suspicious. I see so many listings that are complete gobbeldygook, and they even mention countries, planets, and practices that do not exist. Please understand that everything has roots. All magick has it's roots somewhere. It is also particularly upsetting the way that many people are writing false accounts of Islamic truths all in the name of selling faux genies. I have seen false accounts and bendings of almost every religion, all in the name of selling a dime store trinket as a magickal item. What is particularly annoying is the selling of Hindu goddesses, or putting a photo of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi and calling her a Djinn! I cannot overestimate the importance of educating yourself. Hoaxsters prey on ignorance.

* FALSE CLAIMS: We all want all of our wishes to come true. Sadly, this is not the way life generally works. There are all sorts of factors, karmic and otherwise, that will influence the course of our lives. Wish granting objects are real, and they can help to bring your goals into reality, but I promise you that any seller who promises "all your wishes will come true" is lying. Magick does not work like that. There are spells that can grant wishes, but these spells must typically be handmade and/or cast by a true practitioner. Even so, the wish will often take time to come to pass. There are also other paranormal curios and items that are capable of granting wishes, but they are very rare. I repeat: "all your wishes will come true" is not possible. That said, I have seen many auctions that will promise you that all of your wishes will come true, you will win the lottery, become famous, and have everything you have ever wanted in life all if you buy their magic, sorcerer cast, djinn infested, unicorn, dragon, fairy ring!! Please do yourself a favor and save your money, or buy a lottery ticket--because it will have better odds.Magick does not work that way. It simply does not. Don't find out the hard way.

* Taking the Magick Out Of Magick: The Internet is a magickal thing in itself. It give us instant connection to vast knowledge, other people, and the magickal world itself. But like everything else on the Internet, it has the potential for harm. Understand that we practitoners of the craft are very few and far in between. Among us, there are very few who use the Internet. This is because many of the older practioners are set in their ways, and also because many of us are hermits, recluses, and we do not typically associate with people other than when rendering our services. I myself am a hermit, but I find the Internet to be a wonderful tool for me to reach out and connect with others from behind the solitude of my computer. I know many others like me are elated at being able to offer their services through the Internet. While there are many reputable people offering their services online, I fear that there are way more who are charlatans. I say this because I know the dedication and work it takes to live this life and also sustain myself financially from it. It takes nonstop acquisition, organization, cataloging, crafting, herb growing, supply expense, craft time, invocations, chants, knowledge and study. To take a store bought ring and offer it as a spellcast item when it is merely a store bought ring is an insult to those of us who practice this as a way of life. Many of us often resent the Internet because of the way it has taken the magick out of magick, and I know many practioners who refuse to sell on the Internet because of it. I can honestly say that if 200 listings show up under "spellcast ring", approximately twelve of them are genuine. I know those odds are staggering, but I know it with all of my heart to be true---both as a person of spiritual common sense and a psychic. I take it personally when I see magickal untruths proliferated online. It is the Internet version of the Miss Cleo nonsense.

How The Acquisition Of Paranormal Objects Becomes Corrupted:

* A Blessing Turns To A Curse:

Whereas in the past, paranormal curiosities could only be collected and acquired by those lucky enough to be connected to the right people--today they can be collected by everyone. This is a wonderful thing and such a blessing, but it can also be a curse. People have figured out that people like to collect haunted items, and since there is no way to "prove" an item is haunted over the Internet, it is very sketchy territory. Sure, haunted items are interesting and entertaining-but they contain REAL SPIRITS. These are living, sentient entities with feelings, personalities and energies. They are RARE and they are not a dime a dozen. I have been collecting for 30 years and that is the only reason why I have been able to amass such a huge collection. My life has been dedicated to it and I have worked very hard and have spent a lot of money and time to acquire the items that I have. As I get older and I am not so prone to hoarding everything, I am happy to have a platform through which to share some of these very special items with others. It makes me mad when I see so many people selling things from "witch estates". I promise you that there are not witches dying every other day and leaving limitless amounts of paranormals behind to their relatives. Seems that everyone thinks that is a good story to tell. As someone who has had to go through so much to get the items in my collection, I take it personally when I see an obvious fake item. I also think that the term "witch' is misused, abused, and exploited way too much in auctions. You will often see that I list my item as "From Living Witch Estate". That's my little way of saying we aren't all dead yet--and there are those of us who are alive and creating genuine spellcast items and offering paranormal curios! :)

* Haunted Dolls Aren't Like Chucky:

There is a lot of misinformation going around about how haunted dolls act and what they are capable of. Judging by some haunted doll descriptions, it seems like some people watched too many doll and puppet horror movies in the 1980s. A haunted doll will not chase you around the room, talk to you in plain English, or make you breakfast in bed. Haunted dolls, even though they have different personalities, have certain behaviors that they are known for. True haunted dolls give off strong emotional or physical energies, can make subtle noised like rapping and banging, can cause little upsets like knocking things over or moving things around, and the very embodied dolls will change facial expressions or emit EVP, smells, and other phenomenon. They can effect your emotions, feelings, and mental states.

There is a lot of great magick around that can be tapped into and harnessed with the power of the Internet. Make sure you use it instead of letting it use you. Most of all, use your own intuition and have a wonderful magickal journey!

Many Blessings,

Meena
