| | | | That precious stones had sense and feeling was quite generally believed in Medieval times, and a legend told of St. Martial illustrates this idea. The gloves worn by this saint were studded with precious stones, and when on a certain occasion a sacrilegious act was committed in his presence, the gems horrified at the sight, sprang out of their settings and fell to the ground before the eyes of the on lookers. Tourmaline is a gem with the greatest color range. The Dutch colonists, noting the magnetic quality of Tourmaline when it was heated, used long unfashioned crystals of the gem to draw ash from their tobacco pipes. For this reason they named the stone ashentrekker, meaning ash puller. Although Tourmaline has been used in the making of jewelry in the middle and far East for centuries, it was not until the Dutch introduced the stone into Europe, around 1700 that Tourmaline became admired. The Romans used these stones for tranquil sleep, also to calm the mind and body. Turquoise The blue turquoise signified new life to ancient Egyptian artisans and ensured good fortune for ladies of Tibet. legends claim that the turquoise changes color, losing its blue to become green when drained by a person wearing it. Indians of Mexico used turquoise to guard burial sites. In the Far East it was honored as a lucky stone. The Persians fully appreciated the beauty and power of this stone, and they had a saying that to escape evil and attain good fortune one must see the reflection of the new moon either on the face of a friend, or on a copy of the Koran or a turquoise ,thus ranking this stone with two most preciuos things. Jade Far back in recorded history Chinese associated jade with wisdom, it was used to assure a long life, the ancients believed Jade had healing power. Since Jade was a stone to help the mind, many ancient traders would hold Jade while they were engaged in business transactions. The Greeks believed that when Jade was put on the eyes it would heal them from different ailments, Egyptians believed these cool stones would calm the soul leaving the earth. Carnelian was worn on the hand in ancient Egypt to still anger, jealousy, envy and hatred. It was used to promote peace and harmony and to dispel depression. Carnelian is carried to guard against others who try to read your thoughts. It was worn to prevent skin diseases, insanity, nose bleeds and all blood diseases. Used in the home as a amulet it would guard the home from storms and lightning.precious stones were given to the gods because it was thought anything this beautiful to man would be perfect for the gods. |
