F & Q
Q. What are the differences between plastic tubs and your cedar tubs?
Experience! Northern Lights Cedar Tubs hot tubs are 43" deep (our aqua tubs are 51" deep),
providing a unique soaking effect that is not available in shallow plastic spas. The aromatic smell
of cedar coupled with the relaxing soak, and therapeutic massage provides a unique experience.
Q. Is a wood tub less healthy then a plastic tub?
In 1993 the Food Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin conducted tests to compare wood
surfaces of cutting boards with the plastic equivalents. The assumption was wood would absorb the
juices and become a hot-bed of disease. In other words, plastic would be safer. This wasn't the
case. Seven species of wood and four types of plastic were tested. All were intentionally
contaminated with E-Coli, Listeria and Salmonella. To everyone's surprise, the bacteria were killed
within 3 minutes of touching the wood surface. This was not the case with the plastic surfaces.
Q. What is the cost to operate my tub?
The circular construction accompanied with the high insulating value of cedar and our Northern
Elements Covers will provide excellent insulation value. Outside temperature and your local electric
energy costs (cents/kwhr) are the main variable in cost. Some of our customers run their tubs year
round in extreme northern climates (-30 Celsius) (-22 Fahrenheit) and in those conditions are
reporting a monthly cost of $50/month. The Chofu wood fired tub is the least expensive, requiring
only the cost of wood.
Q. Is a wood tub hard to keep clean?
Cedar is in fact naturally resilient to decay. It's rich oils give cedar the lifespan it is famous
for. Cleaning is the same as most plastic tubs. Typically a light scrub brush with a diluted
solution of liquid bleach works well.
Q. How is my tub or sauna shipped?
Whether you have selected the pre assembled option or the kit form, you tub or sauna will arrive
securely wrapped on a pallet. Most customers will opt for residential delivery which means a
carrier will bring the tub to your house. In this case the local carrier will contact you to
arrange a suitable time for delivery. They will make every effort to unload the tub at the point of
driveway or curb side. They will also attempt to have tailgate delivery arranged to assist in
unloading the hot tub. In some areas tail gate lift trucks are limited or unavailable. In this
case you will need to either remove the pieces off the pallet by hand (driver will usually give you
a hand). If the tub is preassembled you will need to gather a few friends or neighbor to assist.
Note for insurance reasons, the carrier will not position the tub to its final site, only as far as
a safe drop of spot.
Q. Do you ship to Europe?
No, because of the import hassles and costs, not to mention the extra expenses of shipping single
item tubs, we use a network of distributors to offer you great service locally. Plus these
distributors can offer extra services like assembly and installation!

Q. How much energy does a sauna consume?
The great thing about saunas is they only consume power when you're using it. The heaters used by
Northern Lights Cedar Tubs are rated at either 6.0 kw or 7.5Kw. This means for every hour the
elements are on the heater will consume 7.5 Kw of power. At current hydro rates (7 cents per Kwh )
the sauna heater will use 52.5 cents worth of power for every full hour the heater is active. A 1 hr
sauna session with a 1/2 hr heat up will consume no more than 79 cents of hydro. This number is
actually higher than reality because of the insulation value of the wood which will cause the heater
to shut off once the interior has reached desired temperature. Of coarse the wood fired hot tubs
cost nothing other than your sweat equity to chop some wood.
Q. Why is sauna something special in Finland?
Mostly because of ancient traditions. Wherever there have lived Finns, there have also been a sauna
nearby their residences. In the early days of Finnish history, it was a small wooden hut near a
lake, and people used it not only for cleaning themselves, but for childbirths, some medical
operations and other duties that required a clean, bacteria-free environment. Today, practically all
houses in Finland have a sauna. In urban areas, you usually have one per building, but even in a
relatively small apartment it is not a rare piece of luxury these days. This being the case, Finns
discover at an early age what a refreshing way it is to clean oneself both physically and mentally.
The tradition is not a dying one either.
Q. Do Finns really jump out naked into the snow in the middle of sauna bathing and roll around in
winter time? Or go swimming in a frozen lake?
Some do, most don't. This is a habit that requires a healthy heart and a bit of courage, but it is
practised, and there are some enthusiasts who think sauna in the winter is nothing without a quick
swim in the snow or freezing water. Of course, others think this is sheer madness.
