- Novelty Fabric - You may be asking yourself, just exactly what is novelty quilting fabric? Novelty fabrics are fabrics with a theme of some sort. Dog, Cats, Holidays, Kids, and Sports are just a few of the numerous motifs printed on fabric. This type of fabric became popular during the last quarter of the 19th century. At that time they would of been referred to as "conversational prints." During America's Great Depression manufacturers began to sell animal feed and staples like flour and sugar in sacks printed with delightful themes. Once the feed sack was emptied the sack was used to make clothing or quilts. There were some delightful novelty prints on feed sacks. The novelty fabrics available today are endless and include just about any theme you can imagine. Just one word of warning - if you find a novelty fabric you love, you'd better buy it as they are usually available in just one printing.
- Flannel - Flannel is a woven cotton textile with a soft, brushed surface. It's cozy softness invites you to make soft, cuddly projects. Flannels have a fairly open weave and tend to shrink slightly more than ordinary cottons. We have found the average flannel fabric shrinks from approximately 1/2" in length and width per yard, which is not very much. The raised nap of flannel makes for easy sewing. When rights sides are placed together of two fabrics they stick together. Pin the seams to keep the top fabric from creeping while sewing the seam.
- Charm Square Fabric Packs - What is a "Charm Pack?" A charm pack is a professionally cut bundle of 5 inch squares of fabric. A "Charm Pack" will feature a 5 inch by 5 inch square of each piece of fabric in a particular collection. Many times there will be two squares of the same print so be sure to read each individual pack for details.
Please note: We highly recommend that you purchase your Charm Packs and Jelly Rolls before they all sale out. They are a HOT item.
Jelly Rolls - What is a "Jelly Roll?" A jelly roll is a professionally precut bundle of fabric from the same collection rolled and tied up with a ribbon. A jelly roll usually contains 40, 2.5 inch by 44 inch strips. Each jelly roll contains approximately 2 3/4 yards of fabric. Jelly rolls are great for scrap quilts, log cabins or any project requiring strips that are less than or equal to 2.5 inches in width. Many of the new patterns today are suggesting the use of jelly rolls. A great addition to any stash!
Layer Cakes - What is a "Layer Cake?" A Layer Cake is a professionally cut bundle of 40 - 10 inch by 10 inch squares of fabric. A "Layer Cake" will feature a 10 inch by 10 inch square of each piece of fabric in a particular collection. Many times there will be two squares of the same print so be sure to read each individual pack for details.
- What is a "FAT QUARTER?" If you're new to the quilting, sewing, or crafting world, a fat quarter is a half yard of fabric (18" by the width of fabric) cut in half. Fat Quarters are approximately 18" x 22" and are a great way to increase the variety in your fabric collection.
