About Me

I am a Master Gardener and former college level horticulture instructor with over 25 years experience in organic gardening and native plant rescue.   My specialties include native plant identification, medicinal properties of native plants, and the fascinating study of lichens.  I am passionate about the environment and practice environmental stewardship in all areas of my gardening, as well as in wildharvesting native plants from my property, in order to ensure the survival of their species.

I have led and coordinated numerous native plant rescue expeditions in the past, in order to save these irreplaceable gems of nature from areas which were slated for development.  Many rescued plants were donated to nonprofit groups to be used for educational purposes.  I have been a guest speaker at numerous events, teaching on the tremendous value of utilizing native plants in landscaping. and the properties of many of our medicinal native plants.

I have a great love for all plants, but my particular passion is Lichens.  These lovely and unique creations of nature are an artform in and of themselves.  Their beauty and  intricately detailed variations continue to amaze me, and I have spent a great deal of time studying their identification and extensive uses.  Being an avid learner, I have found the old adage "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know" to be very true.  The wide varieties of what would be appear to be the very same lichen type is astonishing.  I could go on and on about the little known properties and artistic uses for these often overlooked and unusual plants, but I will save that for another page to create in the future.

I am fortunate to own acreage located in a beautiful and pristine national forest.  The air quality here is exceptional.  This is very important to the quality of the lichens in particular, as many of them absorb toxins from the air surrounding them.  My property is mostly untouched woodlands, which have an enormous variety of native mosses, ferns, lichens, and wildflower species.   .
