Hyundai is one of the world’s leading auto manufacturers. When Hyundai began in the 1940s, the company’s main businesses were construction and engineering. The automotive branch of Hyundai was founded in 1967 and now boasts the largest auto manufacturing facility in the world. Hyundai is based in Seoul, South Korea, and its name, in Korean, means “modernity.”
Hyundai began selling to the US in 1986, netting record sales that year. Since then, Hyundai has continued to improve, and the company’s reputation for quality and reliability have continued to thrive.
Today, the vehicles sold in the US fall into three segments:sedan, SUV/minivan, and coupe. With a line that is strong all around, Hyundai has been popular in the U.S. for both its sedans and its crossovers.
Hyundai offers four sedans currently. The Hyundai Accent is a small family car, and the lowest priced of all Hyundai vehicles. The company has also reported plans to release a hybrid Accent in the next few years. Next up from the Accent, the Hyundai Elantra. This car is a “top pick” from Consumer Reports and has been widely recognized for its progressive fuel economy. Slightly larger than these two is the Hyundai Sonata, a mid-size sedan noted for sophisticated styling and good safety performance. The fourth sedan, the Azera, is a full size-luxury sedan, and is the top of the Hyundai line worldwide.
Hyundai also offers four vehicles in the SUV/minivan category. The Hyundai Tucson is a compact crossover SUV, meaning it shares the performance and economy of a car with the style and comfort of a sport utility vehicle. The Santa Fe and Veracruz are both mid-size crossover SUVs. The Santa Fe was introduced in 2001 and has been one of Hyundai’s most highest selling vehicles in the U.S. to date. The company reports having had trouble keeping up with demand for the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe continues to win awards as “top pick” for its reliability and safety.
The Veracruz, a vehicle that Hyundai classifies as a “Luxury Utility Vehicle,” is slightly larger than the Santa Fe. It was introduced in 2007 and is currently the largest crossover in Hyundai’s lineup. The Veracruz is recognized for its power, storage space, and luxury feel and appearance. Last in the SUV/minivan segment is the Hyundai Entourage, a four-door minivan that débuted in 2006. The Entourage is based on the Kia Sedona, but actually outsold the Sedona the first year it was on the market. The Entourage has received very high safety ratings and won top awards. In fact, it is the highest-rated minivan for safety to date.
Rounding out the Hyundai line is the Tiburon, a sports-inspired compact 2-door coupe. Tiburon means “shark” in Spanish, and the Tiburon is recognized for its sleek, compact, and athletic design, as well as its performance.
These nine vehicles are a well-rounded group, earning Hyundai numerous awards in the just over two decades that the company has been selling to the U.S. market. Due largely to the success and reliability of the Accent, Santa Fe, and Entourage, Hyundai has been recognized as having one of the highest quality rankings and continues to progress.
