Volkswagen, more casually known as VW, is a German-based auto manufacturer that was founded in 1938. Throughout the 20th century, Volkswagen was known for its small, fuel-efficient cars, and the company still pursues improved fuel economy and environmental integrity today.
Of all of Volkswagen’s vehicles, the VW Beetle, or “Bug,” has been the most popular. First developed during World War II, the Beetle was to be the “People’s Car.” Between its beginning in 1938 and its eventual retirement in 2003, more than 21.5 million Beetles were manufactured and sold worldwide. The original Beetle has recently been replaced by an updated version. The 2009 New Beetle is similar to the original in appearance, but is built on a slightly different body and has updated safety and mechanical features.
The 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit joins the Beetle as Volkswagen’s second compact car. The Rabbit, sometimes known as the Golf, has been on the market since 1974 and is a popular vehicle for its combination of entry level size/price with higher quality features than other small cars.
Volkswagen’s sedans are also popular in the U.S. and other markets. The three vehicles in this family are the Jetta, the Passat, and the Volkswagen CC. The Jetta is a compact, four-door family car that highlights safety and performance. The 2009 Volkswagen Passat, a mid-size vehicle, is slightly larger and incorporates a newer luxury style than previous years.
While Volkswagen’s smaller cars are its top sellers, it also makes several vehicles in the crossover/sport utility category. The Tiguan is the smallest of these as a compact crossover SUV. Slightly larger is the Volkswagen Touareg, a mid-size, 5-door SUV. Both the Jetta and Passat come in 5-door body styles that are slightly larger than their sedan counterparts. These are known as the Jetta SportWagen and Passat Wagon, respectively.
Volkswagen’s largest vehicle is the Volkswagen Routan, a seven seat minivan that was brand new in 2008. The Routan is a variant of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan, two of the most popular selling minivans on the market.
In addition to these core vehicles, Volkswagen’s 2009 lineup also includes two vehicles built specifically for performance, and two convertibles built for style and enjoyment. The Volkswagen GTI MkV is a powerful, performance-heavy relation of the Rabbit. In two- or four-door models, the GTI MkV comes with a faster, more powerful engine that is also fuel efficient.
The other performance-grade car is the 2009 Volkswagen GLI, which VW markets as “an Autobahn-tested sedan.” The GLI also comes in two- and four-door models and shares a similar engine with the GTI MkV.
Finally, Volkswagen’s convertibles. The New Beetle Convertible is, of course, a variant of the New Beetle. The New Beetle itself was introduced in 1999, and the convertible version came shortly after it in 2003. The other convertible, the 2009 Volkswagen Eos, is marketed as “the best of three worlds.” Named after the Greek goddess of wind and dawn, the Eos’ body is similar to the Passat (it seats four), but it is unique as the only retractable hardtop convertible with a sun roof.
