Frequently Asked Questions
Before you email me with a question, please check here. Thanks!

Please note. I am not able to check my eBay email and reply every day. If you email a question, please be patient. I will write back to you -- but it may take me a day or three before I have an opportunity to write.

I’m still bidding. I still have bids pending on auctions closing next week, or I’m considering bidding on next week’s auctions. Can I wait to pay for all a once and save on shipping?

Yes. That’s fine. You don’t need to ask. You don’t need to notify me. Just wait til next week to settle. Or the week after. Please don’t wait more than 3 weeks without checking with me though, or you’ll trigger my non-paying bidder robot. Please also remember when you do pay for items purchased on different days, it’s extra important to to list all the item numbers you’re paying for. Otherwise, I confuse easily, and may not ship all your items.

How much for combined shipping if I bought more than one item? .

In almost every case, uninsured shipping cost is the same no matter how many items you buy -- $1 for USA or Canada, $2 worldwide. If you buy 100 small-size lots, your shipping charge is still just $1 (or $2 overseas). That's just my way of encouraging you to buy more stuff. The only exception is if you buy one or more lots that all by themselves weigh three ounces or more. Such oversize lots are clearly identified as such in their item descriptions. Usually eBay's Paypal payment page will correctly calculate combined shipping. Please don't ask me for an eBay invoice unless you need more information that this, or if the calculator gives the wrong answer.

Credit card. Can I email you my credit card number for a direct credit card payment?

No. I can only accept credit card payments through Paypal or Moneybookers.

Electronic Payment. Can I pay via direct electronic fund transfer to your bank account?

I can only accept bank-to-bank electronic fund transfers for large ($1000+) transactions by prior arrangement.

Mailing cash. Can I pay by mailing cash through the mail?

Starting January 2006, eBay's Safe Payments policy prohibits sellers from soliciting cash payments. Please ask about other payment options.

When will you ship my order?

I normally ship twice a week. On Monday and Thursday afternoons, I usually prepare to ship everything that’s been paid for by Paypal before about 10am New York time, with trip to the post office Tuesday and Friday mornings. Sometimes life or postal service holidays alter this schedule. Once I package your order, I’ll leave feedback and email you to confirm.

Lost email. Why aren’t you responding to my emails?

I promise to respond to every email that needs a response, but I can’t respond to everyone instantly. Listing over 100 items most weeks, I get a lot of email. I don’t get a chance to answer emails every day. Every few days, after I finish shipping to buyers who have paid, I go through my in box. If you haven’t received a response after 72 hours, please try again. Meanwhile, here’s a few things to check.

  • Did you include your eBay user ID and the item number you’re writing about? Please remember I have thousands of eBay items and hundreds of buyers. I can’t promise to remember who you are or what you bought if you don’t tell me.
  • Did you write to my correct email address? It’s always best to cut-and-paste an email address, rather than re-key it. One mis-typed letter is all it takes.
  • Can my email get through your spam filters? Please make sure my address is on your welcome list if you have one. My invoices are, after all, bulk emails with “eBay” in the subject line. Some spam filters over-react to that.

Lost shipments. My shipment hasn’t arrived.

Guaranteed Delivery. I guarantee that you will receive the stamps I ship. If your stamps have not arrived 6 weeks after the ship date, I will send a full refund. Please be patient until the 6 weeks is up. USPS is usually prompt, but sometimes snailmail can be mysteriously delayed.

How often are shipments lost in the mail? Not very often. But it’s always painful when it does happen. I’ve shipped many thousands, probably many tens of thousands, of packages of stamps all over the USA and all over the world in the past 25 years. The mail system is generally very reliable. Way over 99% of the mail gets through with no problem at all.

Sometimes, though, there are inexplicable delays. Occasionally it takes 3 weeks or more for a simple first class letter to arrive. Maybe 1 in 1000 for mail to USA addresses. But delays are much more common in international mail, especially since September 11 and increased airport security. Many of my airmail letters overseas arrive in just a few days. But probably 5% take 2 weeks or more, especially to addresses other than West Europe or Australia. If your shipment hasn’t arrived 2 weeks after my feedback email, please let me know and we can troubleshoot. But sometimes we just need to wait patiently. We normally ought to wait 30 days before we really worry. In any event, the post office won’t accept a lost mail report until after 30 days, and I won’t concede defeat until 6 weeks from shipping.

Alas, sometimes the mail doesn’t get through at all. It just disappears. How often? Less than 1/10th of 1% when the address is USA, Canada, Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand. Probably closer to 1% for addresses in many nations of Latin America, Eastern & Southern Europe, Asia, Africa or the Mideast.

Where does lost mail disappear to?

Some guesses:

  • It went wherever airliner lost luggage goes.
  • It fell under a conveyer belt in a post office facility.
  • It was chewed to shreds in the cancelling machinery.
  • It's stuck at customs.
  • It was stolen by a postal employee.
  • A disgruntled postal employee tossed a bag of mail in a dumpster and went out for beer.
  • It was eaten by albino snails that live in street corner mailboxes.
  • It was delivered to the house next door to you.
  • The shipping address you sent was illegible.
  • It was destroyed in a car, train or plane crash involving a mail shipment.
  • Email me your additional suggestions.
