Your best bet for a great looking shirt is to allow a professional dry cleaner to launder and press it. But when time is short, here are some easy steps to make your wrinkled shirt look fabulous! Take time - make sure you have enough time to do the job right. If you have a cotton dress shirt, wash in cold water, on delicate or wash by hand in the sink. Hang to dry and don't iron until it's almost completely dry.
Set up the ironing board and iron, ensuring the board is close to an electrical outlet so that the electric cord of the iron doesn't get tangled or encumbered when ironing. Fill up the iron with water. This will help steam press your shirt. Plug in the iron and set the fabric dial to "Cotton" (or other appropriate setting). The further the dial goes to the right, the hotter the iron gets. An iron that is too hot can ruin your shirt. Check the tag at the back of the collar for fabric type and temperature settings.
Stand the iron upright so the hot area does not sit on the ironing board. To avoid burning through the ironing board cover, never leave the iron sitting face down. Wait for the iron to heat up, flicking a few drops of water on the bottom - if it sizzles, it's ready. If it's hot, let's start! Fighting exceptionally tough wrinkles? Then you can spray some water or ironing spray on the shirt immediately before ironing. If the shirt has a button-down collar, unbutton the collar. Then iron these parts of the shirt in order.
* Collar - both sides * Sleeves * Back * Front
Iron only one part of the shirt at a time, leaving the rest of shirt to droop off the side of the ironing board. On the collar and cuffs, start at the points and move inward. Don't forget to iron all seams. They can be stubborn to get "straight" but will add a nice finished touch to the shirt. After ironing Hang the shirt on a hanger until you are ready to wear it. Turn the iron off and pull the plug. Leave the iron sitting upright on the ironing board for 15-20 minutes to cool down. It is then safe to put away.
3) Care for your shoes
Remember that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Wearing tattered or worn shoes creates a poor impression to others, just like wearing a wrinkled shirt or a stained tie. Here are just a few helpful hints to "put your best foot forward."
- Always shine your shoes. When you first buy a new pair of shoes, and before you wear them shine them first.
- Periodically clean shoes with cleaner/conditioner prior to polishing.
- Allow shoes to dry completely after each wear. Do this by rotating your shoes between wears. This allows the perspiration to be absorbed.
- Always place shoe trees inside your shoes as soon as you take them off. Shoe trees help reform the shape of the shoe and reduces the creases where the foot bends.
- Always use a shoe horn. A shoe horn keeps the heel from losing its shape.
- To keep your feet from sweating spray your clean dry feet with an aerosol deodorant before you put your socks on. Stick with cotton socks instead of acrylic or wool, because they let your feet "breathe" more.
- When traveling, use shoe bags or wrap shoes in a soft material.
- Cover scratches and scuff marks by applying a shoe cream that is slightly lighter than the color of the leather.
- Resole your heels whenever necessary.
- Use rubber overshoes in sloppy weather. Wet leather wears quicker than dry.
- It's not a lot of work to take good care of your shoes nor does it require a lot of time. By taking better care of your shoes, you improve your overall image and save money too!
4) Learn to tie the Windsor Knot
To tie the Windsor Knot, select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then simply follow the steps below:

1) The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".

2) Bring the wide end "W" up through the loop between the collar and your tie; then back down.

3) Pull the wide end "W" underneath the narrow end "N" and to the right, back through the loop and to the right again so that the wide end "W" is inside out.

4) Bring the wide end "W" across the front from right to left.

5) Pull the wide end "W" up through the loop again.

6) Bring the wide end "W" down through the knot in front.
7) Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar. | ... or a bow tie
To tie the Bow Tie Knot, select a bow tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then simply follow the steps below:

1) Place the bow tie around your neck, situating it so that end "A" is about two inches longer than end "B".

2) Cross end "A" over end "B".

3) Bring end "A" up and under the loop.

4) Now double end "B" over itself to form the front base loop of the bow tie.

5) Loop end "A" over the center of the loop you just formed.

6) Holding everything in place, double end "A" back on itself and poke it through the loop behind the bow tie.
7) Adjust the bow tie by tugging at the ends of it and straightening the center knot. |
5) Care for your tie
- A properly-cared-for tie can last you virtually forever.
- Hang up your ties, it helps take out some of the wrinkles. Knit ties can be stretched when hung, so gently roll them up and store them in a drawer.
- Hang ties up on a rack designed for that purpose. Ties slip and twist on hangers, and will probably fall off.
- Rolling up the tie from the narrow end first and leaving it for a couple of days will remove wrinkles in the tie.
- Storing ties out of the light prevents fading.
- For traveling, loosely roll ties and place them inside a pair of socks or use a tie case.
- Cut any loose threads on your tie. Pulling them can do major damage to your tie.
- Don't wear the same tie twice in a row, ties need time to return to its normal shape.
- Always unknot your tie when you are not wearing it, leaving it knotted can damage the tie and cause permanent wrinkles.
- To untie your tie, reverse the tying procedure. Pulling the smaller end through the knot can cause the tie to stretch out of shape.
By following the steps above, you'll ensure that all the pieces of a good wardrobe fit perfectly...on you. | |
