How It All Began

Several years ago, I brought home my first cannas, about 400 of them, from my sister's yard.  Knowing nothing of gardening, I planted them everywhere, hoping that they'd like one spot at least and would grow for me.  Three months later, I had a canna forest!  They ALL grew and were about four feet tall.  The following year, they came back up and grew to SEVEN feet!  From that moment on, I was hooked.

The No-Mow-Grass Society

As I acquired plants and realized that they would grow for me, I began digging up the bermuda everywhere.  Family and neighbors thought I had lost my mind!  No lawn?  Impossible!  Who could live without lawn?  Well, I do!  I'm a bonafide member of the No-Mow-Grass Society.  The only grass I grow is ornamental--pampas, mondo, maiden, japanese, etc.  And everywhere you look, there are beautiful, exotic "bloomers", like the ones pictured here.  (In case you're wondering, the pictures are:  Journey's End Canna (top), Red Attraction Water Lily (Middle), and Change of Pace Iris (bottom))

I'm also a ponder.  I currently have four small garden ponds and three whiskey barrel ponds, with plans to build a bigger pond in the spring.  Despite popular belief, ponds are fairly low maintenance.  I clean mine in the spring and in the fall.  And the rest of the time, I just enjoy the soothing sounds of the trickling water and the fish frolicking below the surface as well as the beautiful water lily blooms.

Evolving

We hope that one day The Butterfly Ranch will be a well-recognized botanical garden.  We intend to keep expanding and changing, adding exotic plants to attract more wildlife and more human visitors.

We plan to offer more plants, seeds, and garden accessories as well.  But it all takes time.  In the meantime, we currently offer a wide selection of plants, seeds, books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, housewares and gift items.  Please check back often to see how our inventory changes.  And don't forget to see us first in the spring for some delightful new plants to add to your gardens.
