I have had hundreds, close to thousands of pairs of jeans and pants find their way through my hands and measured by my tattered and trusty tape measure. I get loads of questions about the fit of pants and jeans and so I decided to answer some frequently asked questions so that you, too, can find the perfect fit.
Ok, here are the basics:
Waist: I measure flat across the waist of the jeans and double that measurement.
Inseam: This measurement if from the crotch (I wish there was a nicer word for it but there just isn't) to the hem of the pants at the ankle, the inside of the leg.
Rise: From the crotch to the top of the waist over the zipper.
When you see that a pair of jeans measure 32X31, that means the waist is 32 and the inseam is 31. This is how men's jeans are measured but their jeans usually are easier to buy because the rise is always close to the same (but oddly enough they rarely measure what the label says so if you are in the market for men's jeans, always measure your own and ask the seller what the jean's actual measurements are!). What's tricky about ladies jeans is that the rise can go from 6 inches to 13 or 14 inches, sometimes even more when it comes to suit pants, they are usually much higher waisted. This is why the rise measurement is so crutial in buying jeans and pants for ladies. A pair of size 4 jeans can have a 32 inch waist and I will get questions about why the waist is so big. But if the rise is 6 or 7 inches, they will rest very low on the waist so the waist will be bigger. Any if you are "hippy" or have a bigger booty (I feel your pain), if you don't want said booty to peep out from the top of your jeans, you need to skip the super low jeans (especially if they are 1 or 2% spandex)!
The same happens with higher rise pants, a ladies size 12 suit pant may have a 29 or 30 inch waist but a 14 inch rise, the waist will land above the belly button so it will be smaller.
I always include the waist, inseam and rise measurements in all my listings but if you know you have wider/narrower hips or you are hard to fit, you may inquire about hip measurements. When I take a hip measurement, I measure flat across at the crotch. (I have been asked for a lower measurement). I don't measure the leg opening, generally, either, but I am happy to do so if you need it or you like a specific cut (tapered, boot, flare, etc.)
So many jeans run different. If you have any imput or questions about this page, please let me know! Happy shopping!
