Some of the new protein skimmers on the market are multifunctional and have room to make them wet dry filters in addition to protein skimmers. The most versatile units are the supreme skilter, and the Via Aqua multiskimmer. Both have chambers where you can put bio media like ceramic rings or bio balls and can make them multi use as both wet dry and protein skimmer.Both units are economical under 100.00 dollars and with the addition of bio media can be made into hang on wet dry skimmer units for smaller reef or saltwater aquariums. (under 80 gallons) Just pickup one of these models and put bio media in the extra space, hang them on your aquarium and put established bacteria in them and they are capable of supporting reef life with low cost.To make them low maintenance I recommend you buy and internal prefilter(goes in aquarium and pulls out debri and fish waste)and then you will have to clean them very little.(CLICK ON PICTURES FOR MORE INFORMATION)
This is the supreme skilter 250 which is one of the most economical of all the skimmer units. It has a fairly powerful motor with a large filter cartridge for particulate filtration. After set up put bio balls in the filtering chamber(with out disturbing the venturi) and you have created a mini wet dry type setup.The bio balls can be put in over the water line and I find that you will have fairly good dinitrification, This unit is good for nano tanks up to about 30 gallon aquariums, and works well as addtional filtration for larger tanks.
This is a powerhead prefilter unit which basically uses a powerhead with filtering attachment to spin the water clean. It has a sponge filter pad with bio balls to give you more dinitrification. This unit prefilters about 150 gallons and hour and works well in combination with protein skimmers and canister filters to pull most of the floating detritus out of the water. It also creates wave action which is great for reef tanks. It is totally submersible and has an air injector attachment. It can also double as a filter for turtle aquariums with 2 inches of water or more in it. Clean it often.
