Details about the photos featured on this page:
i) Books in Thomas Jefferson’s personal library. Prior to its partial destruction by fire at Monticello, this collection was thought to be the finest in America. In a letter to John Adams in 1818, Jefferson wrote that the loss of a great many luxuries would leave him unscathed, but that the prospect of being denied access to the instruments of learning was an event too calamitous to contemplate: “I cannot LIVE without books.” Included on this shelf is Clarkson’s monumental Abolition of The Slave Trade (1808, 2 vols.).
ii) Exterior photo of the Saint Louis Public Library showing a lionhead fountain, along with the engraved lines of a major 19th-century American poet.
