| Important Information:
Appraisals / Valuations: We do not have the facilities to provide an appraisal. For the record, jewelry appraisals are quite subjective. There are many values of jewelry. One if you are a retailer, another if you are a consumer and still another if you are an appraiser. The higher the appraisal, the more the seller wants for their piece. The lower the appraisal, the less a jeweler will pay for a piece. And the piece can be the same identical item, all with different values to different people, each with their own interest in mind.
Many folks who do appraisals want to know how much you paid for the item. The best person to do an appraisal would be an independent insurance appraiser. Even then, they should want to see all the information (specifications) that you have.
The best determination of value is the joy and pleasure you will receive owning / wearing or giving it as a gift.
Cabochon: A cabochon (cabachon or cabouchon as it is sometimes spelled) is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished rather than faceted. The result is a strikingly beautiful, eye-catching gemstone.
Carat, Caret, Karat or Carrot? Carat: A carat with an initial C and two a's is a unit of weight used for gemstones. One carat is 200 milligrams which equals 0.2 grams in weight. A gram, incidentally, is 1/454 of a pound which would make 28.375 grams to an ounce. A 150 pound person would weigh approximately 340,500 carats which just might bend your jeweler's carat scale a bit out of shape.
Caret: A caret with one a and one e is a wedge-shaped proofreader's mark ( ^ ) used to indicate an insertion into text. The caret mark is found on the shift 6 on your computer keyboard. There are several other uses and definitions for this nifty wedgie.
Karat: A karat with an initial k is a reference to the purity of gold. As defined, pure gold is 24 karat. Karat is often abbreviated as k or kt with or without a period following the abbreviation.
Carrot: A carrot with two Rs is a root vegetable that, historically, came in a wide range of colors including black, green, orange, purple, red, white and yellow. Green? And I thought they were just a bit moldy.
Chain Necklaces: Solid 100% copper, 10kt gold and .925 sterling silver chains are available in a variety of lengths. Please see our eBay listing under Other Items in our eBay store or email us with your needs.
Cleaning Your Jewelry: Metal-specific dipping solutions are available at most variety and department stores. Since these solutions are made from chemicals, extreme caution should be exercised when using this type of solution. Some stones are highly perishable in these solutions, so follow jeweler recommendations. If in doubt, do NOT dip.
Anti-tarnish strips are available to purchase. These help minimize the natural patina (tarnish) on sterling silver. They should be replaced on a regular basis depending upon the area to be protected and the airflow. Many of our sterling silver pieces are shipped with a small black piece of anti-tarnish material to protect from tarnishing.
The following are general, non-specific guidelines to jewelry cleaning. This is not meant to replace specific cleaning instructions provided by competent sources. When in doubt, ask a professional jeweler before cleaning.
Most gemstones can be sparingly cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid exposure to strong light and sudden changes of temperature. As with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used. Hair-spray and perfumes can leave permanent residue on all gemstones so be sure to keep your jewelry far away from these common items.
Color: Color is subjective and the result of many variables. The color of the gemstones may and will probably vary from what you see on your computer monitor.
Some naturally-occurring gemstones come in a wide range of color shades. The particular gemstone used in an individually-crafted piece will vary from the color displayed on your computer monitor or printed from a printer. Some gemstones, such as Alexandrite, readily change color as the lighting source changes.
