The 4C's of Diamonds

Diamond is the hardest naturally forming material on Earth.  Diamonds occur when carbon is subjected to intense heat and pressure, often at a depth of 100 miles into the Earth’s crust, and over a period of as long as 3.3 billion years.  Their hardness is a watchword:  indeed, the word “diamond” stems from the Greek adámas, meaning "unbreakable".  The only substance on Earth that can scratch a diamond is another diamond, a property that has made for many industrial applications of the stone.
