Early in my career, when working in the mining industry near Moab, Utah, my beautiful wife and I would hike in the magnificent red-rock canyon country and occasionally be greeted by fine specimens of agate, petrified wood, silicified barite nodules, and other colorful rocks and minerals that we would collect. Our growing collection begged the purchase of lapidary equipment, which allowed us to reveal the real beauty of the specimens. This in turn led to a class in silversmithing and the acquisition of the tools needed to create gold and sterling silver settings in which to mount our gemstones.
Later in my career, research projects and their accompanying geologic field work serendipitously led to discoveries of turquoise, variscite, and opal deposits. This once again sparked our interest in lapidary and silversmithing. We now have several gemstone claims in Utah and Nevada where we produce these minerals on a very small-scale using hand-tools.
