Since those vary, this article will attempt to highlight key points in part matching and searching. Note the following:
- Given material is only general information about hard drive donor matching. Keep in mind that there are always exceptions that may not be included in this article.
- Hard drive manufacturers did not contribute to this material in any way, shape, or form; it is based strictly on experts' experience in the industry.
- Do everything at your own risk. Always consider contacting a professional, before you attempt self-repair.
- Always try to get a donor with the closest manufacturing date.
- Donor drive matching criteria are applicable for both desktop (3.5") and laptop (2.5") hard drives
Symptoms of PCB failure
Following symptoms of a media failure are may be results of failed circuit board component (PCB). Percent that follows the description represents the chance of the failed PCB..
- Hard drive does not spin up. Either no sound or a short, quiet tickling sound can be heard. (~80%)
- Hard drive does not spin up. Buzzing sound can be heard. (~20%)
- Hard drive spins up fine, but is not recognized in device manager or in BIOS. Hard drive recognized with default manufacturer value (like 0GB capacity, wrong SN or Model). (~30%)
- There is a burning smell can be sensed coming from a hard drive or circuit board. (~95%)
- You can see a burned component on the hard drive circuit board. (~95%)
- Hard drive makes a clicking sound. (~20%)
- Extremely slow reading. (~10%)
- Hard drive, after some time disappears from Device Manager and from the system. May also be running very hot. (~40%)
