About the man
Yes, the above really is a portrait of the owner and what he's wearing is not simply a product of the painter's imagination. He owned and wore everything you see here although none of these pieces is being offered in this sale. Would you believe that the portrait is nearly life-size?
This Gentleman had a taste for British clothing and cars, and leopard print walls. The first time I visited the house there were three classic Rolls Royces and a classic Bentley idling in the driveway being readied for their own sale. Over the years he owned a number of classic British sports cars as well.
The lifestyle of this Gentleman matched the wardrobe. He summered in Newport and wintered in Palm Beach. He played polo and golf and took life at a run.
About the collection
If you were able to go to London and New York and indulge your taste for the finest clothing and accesories your wardrobe might look very much like this one. A wide variety of London firms are represented but this Gentleman favored Bowring Arundel & Co., Chittleborough Morgan, New & Lingwood, John Lobb, and Locke & Co. In addition, he bought many hats from Worth & Worth in New York.
