How to Detect 'Wholesale List Scams'
FOCUS: INTERNET SCAMS
eBay Wholesale List Scams: Buyer Beware
Stan's Club Online | Nov. 23, 2005

Avoiding the scammers

"It's deceptive and I think (sellers) know it's deceptive."
In a recent AuctionBytes article, Mark Lewis discusses ‘Wholesale List Scams’ on eBay.

Accordint to Lewis: "A wholesale list is a compilation of contacts, often email links and phone numbers used to buy inexpensive merchandise..."  He goes on to point out that, "Wholesale lists are perfectly legal and they can be quite useful to PowerSellers on eBay."

'Wholesale List Scams' involve unscrupulous sellers who post auctions that would appear to be for actual items (based on the auction picture) when, in reality, the auctions are merely for ‘wholesale lists’ of sellers of those items.

As Lewis puts it, unwitting buyers “are buying lists, usually called "wholesale lists", and not the actual items pictured in the auctions.” … “It's deceptive and I think (sellers) know it's deceptive.  He says of putting up a picture of one thing and then selling something else: “that's the bait and switch.”

In one popular version of this scam, unscrupulous sellers post auctions that appear to be for “Ipod Nanos” (based on the auction pictures).  A hurried buyer will see the picture and think, “Wow! Here’s an Ipod Nano for $9.99.”  He bids on the auction (maybe he even bids it up to $70 or $80) and wins - only to find out (after he’s paid) that, in fact, the auction was not for an Ipod Nano.  Rather, it was for an Ipod Nano Wholesale List.

To be fair, the scammers do state in their auction titles (and in their auction posts) that the auction is for a wholesale list.  And, in this respect, the buyer does bear some responsibility.

Nevertheless, the scam here involves false advertising in that the auction picture is clearly not representative of the item being sold.  An honest “wholesale list seller” will post a "picture of a wholesale list" as opposed to a "picture of the item".

Anatomy of a Scammer's Auctions
  • Gallery Image is a picture of the item as opposed to a picture of a wholesale list or some facsimile thereof.

  • Feedback Score is low    e.g. Feedback Score: 150

  • Feedback Percent is low  e.g. Feedback Percent: 94%

  • Member Since: 'Date' indicates a relatively new account.

  • Has negative reviews claiming 'False or misleading advertising'.

  • Source: Infotopia
So, how can you tell, “Who the wholesale list scammers are?”

Simply look at their auction pictures (the gallery image or the main picture).  Then ask yourself, “Did this seller list a picture of a wholesale list? - or - Did he list a picture of the actual item?”

If he listed a picture of the actual item, then he is misleading his buyers (and he’ll probably have negative reviews for 'false or misleading advertising').  What’s more, he’s engaging in an unscrupulous practice affiliated with wholesale list scams.

My recommendation: run (don’t walk) from such a seller.  If he can’t be trusted to provide you with an honest picture of what he’s selling, then how can he be trusted to provide you with good wholesale contacts?

Remember this rule of thumb: Always check the picture.  If it’s for a picture of the actual item (as opposed to a picture of a wholesale list), then it’s probably a scam and a headache you don’t need.

Honest “wholesale list sellers” will always show you a picture that is representative of the item they’re selling (e.g., a picture of a wholesale list or an eBook, etc.).  These are the ones you can trust.

How to avoid "Wholesale List" Scams
  • Avoid auctions where the picture does not represent the item being sold.  Simply put, this is false advertising.  Any seller who shows a picture of a Pool Table, or a Trampoline, or a DVD Player, or an Ipod Nano - when all he's selling is a list - should be avoided.

Legitimate "Wholesale List Sellers" will post a picture that is representative of "what their selling".

  • Don't buy lists from sellers with low feedback ratings. If a seller has a feedback rating below 100, then, chances are, he is relatively inexperienced and knows nothing about buying wholesale.  I would personally only buy a wholesale list from a seller with a feedback rating of 1000 or above.

  • Don't buy lists from sellers with low feedback scores.
  • One of the tell-tale signs of a scammer is a low feedback score.  This is because the people who've been scammed before you will leave negative feedback for the scammer.  A seller with a feedback score below 99% is unacceptable and should be avoided.

  • Don't buy lists from sellers with "Brand New Accounts".
  • Check the seller's "Member Since: Date" listed on any of his eBay auction pages.  If he's been a member for 3 months or less, his listing should be held suspect.  If he's been a member for less than 30 days, avoid him like the plague.

One of the latest developments is that scammers are running “Private Auctions” and are running their scams through multiple eBay accounts that they shutdown after several weeks due to the high volume of negative reviews.  You can detect this kind of scammer because he’ll have a very low feedback rating and his eBay account will have been opened relatively recently.
