          DIMETHICONE

Our Dimethicone is a product that will help you make great home and personal products. It was originally used for its waterproofing properties in barrier creams (for diaper rash, eczema, etc.). Then, it was found that as little as 2% - 3% added to cosmetic formulas greatly improved the skin-feel of creams and lotions, reducing tackiness and improving slip. It will reduce tackiness even at 0.5% of your formulation. According to many sources, if it is used at a rate of 1% to 30% dimethicone conforms to the FDA's Tentative Final Monograph on OTC Skin Protectants. However, provided you make no drug claims for it, dimethicone does not have to be declared as an active ingredient, nor does your product or facility need to conform to OTC drug production standards. Dimethicone can be added to any cosmetic and declared on the ingredient label in descending order, as usual. Dimethicone, comes in various viscosities. This ones is the medium grade, 350 cs. Dimethicone is essentially nontoxic, nonbioactive, nonbioaccumulating, nonstinging on skin and tasteless. From a production and storage view, it is low odor, low toxicity, low environmental hazard, low fire hazard. In the environment, it ultimately breaks down into inorganic silica, carbon dioxide and water vapor. It is not hazardous as defined by OSHA. Dimethicone has a long storage life and is nonrancidifying. Dimethicone is not soluble in water, nor in oil, but is easily dispersed in emulsions. It can be combined and added as part of your oil phase. It is generally added to lotions after the water and oil phases have been combined and the mixture has begun to cool, before fragrance and preservatives are added.. When formulating a recipe, a good place to start might be to replace a portion of your oil phase with dimethicone (try it at 1% to 3% of your formula to start)."
