KATANA (Samurai sword) is symbols of SAMURAI.

It is needless to say that KATANA is symbol of SAMURAI.
But every times, meaning of "having the KATANA" have changed to.

KATANA with SAMURAI

SAMURAI was the one of classes in Japanese class system in pre-industrial Japan. Originally, SAMURAI was not warrior but the guard for imperial's or noble's territories. "dispute of noble" had changed to "war", they took part in the war.

It is birth of SAMURAI as warrior.

At that time, their way of fight had brutality and no rules.

Following at the time, a rule laid down gradually. Finally the rule had been sublimated to philosophy or morality. It called "BUSHIDO" which means "Way of SAMURAI", loosely analogous to the European concept of chivalry.

Having the KATANA

BUSHIDO have the most famous code "BUSHIDO is to prepare for death". It is not recommendation of the suicide.
It says that to live for upright (noble-minded) life.

In 19th century, The class system was abolished by modernization, the SAMURAI class vanished as well.

Now that KATANA is not weapon but is one of a work of art.

Still now, however, KATANA is symbol of SAMURAI and BUSHIDO. It means a sense of high morality.
